    Screeching repro V belt

    I have a Quanta belt that drives the water pump and the power steering pump (The PS pump then drives the alternator). We got the belt to stop screeching temporarily by removing the wheel, putting a strap around the PS pump and having one person pull *really* hard on the strap while another tightened the nuts. The screeching soon returned. My pulleys are all stock and in good condition.

    Has anyone else had this problem with Quanta belts? Could the V angle be wrong?

      been using quanta belts for years and no problems. suggest ya get a stick of belt wax and coat the belt with the wax. perhaps the pully grooves are oxidized from infrequent use. good luck,mike

        Clean the pulley grooves.

          I have the same problems with both the Quanta water pump and alternator belt - new pulleys new belts - they are simply too long (or too small) - I have a 69 L46 w/o PS and AIR

            No problems here with my 7 year old Quanta belts.

              Mike R,

              Old mechanics' and used car salesman's trick. Take a bar of soap and lightly touch it to each side and the bottom of the V when the belt is moving. You can also use soft soap and lightly coat a small part of the belt when it is not moving. This is good for several thousand miles.

                Hello;
                Have you tried the Service Manual procedure?
                Install a 3/8 x 16 thread bolt in the vacant hole of the PS pump to use as a leverage point.
                Don't remember at this moment if there is a bracket bolted in the 4 o'clock position on a 68-69 PS pump.
                Hope this helps.

                  I had a problem similar to this a while ago. Before I offer anything, what year and engine are we talking about?

                    Re: Screeching repro V belt

                    If my memory serves me correctly. I think your problem is the angle of the V as the belt was manufactured. If you do not have the correct angle to match your pulley, it will cause the belt to ride down inside the V in the pulley. The incorrect pulley to belt combination will not carry sufficient torque to spin the pump under high loads and will slip. Belt dressings, wax, etc only hide the actual problem.
