Mid Year Air Cond Duct Hose

Does the left air condition duct that is connected to the main air box by a 2 3/4 inch hose have one or two of the Wittek clamps. The AIM seems to show only one in the C60 section page A5 for the 1965,66,&67 installed on the duct end only. The Wittek clamp was GM#9414040.
    Thanks,

Long island says there are two used. The other side has the big clamp so I assume both go on the left hand duct. LICS also has NOS ones that they sell. Mike

      Page,

I only remember seeing one on mine, but I will check to be sure when I'm out to work on the car next Wednesday.

Enclosed are some photos of and original left side duct with one Wittek clamp on the duct end. If you notice the orientation of the clamps tower, it's facing the firewall at about a 9:00 o'clock position. This would have been very difficult to install on the assembly line in this position. I believe that the clamp was installed to keep the hose on the duct prior to installation and the whole thing was then placed under the dash as a assembly. The other end of the hose that went to the main air box had no evidence of a clamp. There was evidence of some type of caulking on the air box end of the hose.
On a side note if you Google Wittek Mfg Co. you can see how management destroyed the company in the early 1990's. There is a 3 part story in a newspaper article.

            Page,

Sorry I can't answer the clamp question as mine is not original.

But I have a related question. I have trouble with the ac hose being torn by the e brake limit switch stop. Only an issue on 65 and 66 and I can't tell if you have a 67 or not. (ebrake moved on 67's)

I have tried to get enough arch in the hose to clear the stop but to no avail.

            Randy

              Hi Page,
Did you get my PM by chance? I wanted to make sure it didn't end up it that "cyber black hole"!

                Hi Randy,
The duct pictured is from a 1965. The 2 3/4 inch duct hose is flatten into an oval shape between the duct and the air box. I believe this was done on the 1965 & 66 to clear the E.Brake switch. The hose is about 1 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 in the flatten area. Enclosed are a couple of photos.

Thanks for the photos. So that's how they did it.

                    Page,

I checked my car last night, and only found the single 2-3/4" Wittek Tower clamp. Today I checked an Illustrated Parts Book (1968) and it has a page titled "1964-1967 Corvette Air Conditioning Outlet Duct (Typical)", with an illustration that combines both LH & RH ducts (C60-A4 and C60-A5). In this drawing, which is very similar to the drawings in the AIMs in style (looks like a copy), it shows TWO Wittek Tower clamps, one at each end of the flexible hose that connects to the LH Duct Asm.

Checking the AIMs going back from 1967 to 1964, they show only ONE Wittek Tower clamp used at this location. However, the 1963 AIM shows TWO Wittek Tower clamps used for this application, just as the Illustrated Parts Book shows.

From past experience examining the Illustrated Parts Book, it seems that they often used a drawing from a 1963 Corvette and never updated it for following years, or they updated the part numbers (when shown) only, but not the drawing itself. I suspect the drawing in the IPB is from 1963, even though the title of the drawing is "1964-1967 Corvette Air Conditioning Outlet Duct (Typical)"

I only found one Wittek Tower Clamp on mine, as shown in the 1964-67 AIMs, but since the AIMs often show only one part when multiple parts are implied, it looks like we require expert testimony or multiple reports from cars with C60 in their original configuration, in order to be sure.
