Guys, Ed McComas who is a good friend of mine and who is a regular on this discussion board was scheduled to have had heart surgery yesterday. He and I live just west of Huntsville, Alabama but he went to Cleveland, Ohio for the procedure. I have not heard anything yet but when I do I will post an update. In the meantime please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks! Brooks Glover (2141)

Re: Ed McComas
Will do and thanks for the update! I knew what week but not what day. I hope everything goes as by the book and routine as possible!
He has been of great help to me over the least 9 months on my '56, one of the best people I have ever met since being in the hobby for almost 15years now!- Top

Re: Ed McComas
Quick update...surgery has been cancelled due to complications arising from bursitis which required treatment with steroids. Can't do heart surgery when you are being treated with systemic steroids.
My wife and I are on our way home this evening. Should be back in Huntsville about 7 pm this evening.
I will reschedule surgery, most likely at University of Alabama at Birmingham or Vanderbilt University in the near future.
I appreciate your kind thoughts.- Top

Ed,
Our thoughts are with you. If you need something don't hesitate to let us know. It's not far to Madison!
Joe
PS. If you get a pig valve, I don't want to hear any "oinking". Hear enough of that over here in Razorback land! Roll Tide!!!!!!! Go Vols!!!!!!- Top

Re: Ed McComas
Cleveland Clinic is one of my "backups". If/when I need a second procedure that's where I will go. One of my three grafts has shut down thanks to some poor testing here in Orlando, but I fooled them in that I develope my own collaterals easily to backfeed the area. Now if I could only do something like that with the carb on my Vette, Ha!
Best wishes Ed for a good outcome.

Re: Ed McComas
Thanks guys, I can always count on ya'll for a laugh.
Mitral valve repair, not replacement is the current plan. I hope Vanderbilt and / UAB agree.
My wife has a bad feeling about Cleveland Clinic, and I should have listened to her. One thing I realized from this experience is that we need to be closer to home. My wife had absolutely no support when this issue came up. Vanderbilt and UAB are both 2 hours from home, and both have good reputations for this surgery.- Top

Re: Ed McComas
Ed;
There is something to be said for convenience, specially with C.C.. To get there for us requires a connection flight. There are no directs which makes Chicago my first choice, and is where I had my original work done back in 93 (still ticking).
On the Mitral Valve; I was told I had a problem by tests here in Orlando several years ago. My latest test in Chicago indicates there is no such problem. In my case, my "convenience" could have had me go under the knife needlessly. Always get a good second (or even third) opinion.

Re: Ed McComas
Stuart and Ed, I went to a heart specialist shortly after the super bowl. My brother is an MD and he had the heart docs throw the book at me. Had all the tests know to man. Most of them anyhow. Passed every one of them as no one would believe my story. I cannot handle caffeini and had a major overdose of it at the horrible super bowl party. Steelers lost you know.
Mitral valve: I was told that at our age it is quite normal for it to have a very minor leak.
Aorta valve: Same thing. Minor leak-no point deductions and no knife work necessary.
But the heart docs and other MDs scared the crap out of old JD so I decided its' time to quit pigging out as don't want any pig valves just yet. So I went down 4 pants sizes,lost over 40 lbs of fat and feel great.
Sgt Ed. Like I told you earlier today we are all praying for the best for our pal. I realize now you have ill feelings about the Cleveland Clinic but it does have a great reputation. Several members of my family and my brothers inlaws have gone under the knife there and all made it thru with no issues. Take care Ed. See you on the other side. JD
P.S. The usher of the church I go to is 76 years old. He is my pal and takes note if I am absent from church which isn't often. Anyhow he got a nice pig aorta valve and is doing just fine inspite of my teasing him.- Top

Re: Ed McComas
J.D.;
Good to hear you're taking care of yourself. You looked good last August so if you lost more weight you can probably pick up a few more mpg crusin in your SWC. On the valves, did they give you a prescription for an antibiotic so you can pre-medicate b4 seeing your dentist? I had that for several years, but no longer need it.
At Cleveland Clinic, many of the patients are from the middle east where a great number of our classic Vettes are going. The last 78 P.C. my son had went to Du Bai out of Miami.
