    Ok, the 660 case was used in 68-69-70 which would give you the P9H Muncie plant, 1969, manufacturer's ID and the A code is for the gear ratio, wide ratio in this case, should have two rings around the circumference of the input splines. 196727492 is the vin derivitive of the original car, I don't have the breakdown of that in front of me now. If the original input gear, it should have two rings cut around the middle of the splines.

      "P9H12A"
      P = 4-speed Muncie
      9 = model year, 1969
      H = June
      12 = 12 day of the month
      A = wide ratio

      "196727492"
      "1" = Chevrolet
      "9" = Model year, 1969
      "6" = usually a letter, assembly plant of car. Is this actually the letter "G" (Framingham)?
      "727492" = last 6 digits of VIN

      "3925660" main case used in 1968, 1969, and possibly early 1970 models. Most 1970 models used a "3925661" main case.
      "3846429" tail section = 1964 Muncie

      The 1965-1970 Muncies used tail section "3857584" except 1970 A-body M-22 used tail section "3978764".

      What is the casting number on the side cover? Is it "3950306"?

        As I remember, some Pontiacs used the '429 tail section long after Chevy had moved to the speedo output on the pass side.

          Bill,

          I believe that you are correct about the 3846429 tail shaft being used on later Pontiac Muncies. However, the partial VIN starts with a "1" (for Chevrolet). If the main case was from a Pontiac the first digit on the partial VIN would be the number "2".

            I appreciate the detailed breakdown on what appears to be a mix of several transmission castings, or should I say just the tail section.

            Dave on that casting number on the side cover: I'm leaving for PA from FL, and closed up the garage, so I'm unable to retrieve that info at the present time.

            Again thanks to everyone,

            Bill

              Pontiac A-bodys used the "429" tail housing thru the 1970 model year...

              The "306 side cover was used from the beginning of the 1969 model year til about April-May, when the 3952648 side cover(untapped for TCS) went into use...

              This trans could also be just another Muncie "mut" made from various parts from several cannibalized Muncie 4-speeds...

              Hope this helps... Eric
