    68 L79 Alt. Pulley

I read in past threads that a member installed power steering in a 66 L79 . Joe Lucia told him he needed a certain Alt pulley so the belts will clear. I believe it would be the same for a 68 L 79. Is this true? Thanks, Jeff

    Re: 68 L79 Alt. Pulley

    Jeff,

According to my 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1965) the 1966 Corvette (Sp. H/Per. w/Hyd. Lifters, P/S)(327)(exc. C.A.C.) used alternator pulley 3829387 (3 3/8" dia.).

My 1968 and 1969 Chevrolet Parts Catalogs (Oct. 1967 and Oct. 1968) do NOT list an alternator pulley for the 1968 Corvette (327) w/Sp. H/Per.

My 1972 Corvette Parts Catalog lists GM # 1970831 as the alternator pulley (3 3/16" dia.) for 1969-1972 Corvettes w/H/Per, Sp. H/Per.(350)(exc. C.A.C., T Ign.).

    My 1968 and 1969 Corvair-Chevy II-Chevelle-Camaro Parts Catalogs (July 1968 and Oct. 1968) lists GM # 1970831 for the 1968 Chevelle (S.S.), Camaro; 1969 Chevelle, Camaro w/396 Sp. H/Per.; and 1969 Camaro (302).

According to GM Parts History GM # 1970831 was discontinued in Nov. 1984 and replaced with GM # 3844100.

I sold my original 3829387 pulley (stamped "3829387 AI") but I have a NOS 3844100 pulley (3 3/16" O.D.). I could post a few photos of the 3844100 pulley along with dimensions if that would be helpful.

      David and Jeff------

I believe the GM #3829387 would be the correct alternator pulley for a 1968 Corvette with L-79 and N-40. The GM #3829387 is discontinued but easily available in reproduction.

          Jeff-----

I've never paid any attention to the date coding system on these hoses, but the coding system might be as you surmise. However, even if it is, I really doubt that if this is an NOS hose, the year date is 1969. If it is, the hose will likely be packaged in a paper envelope with orange, white, and black GM-Saginaw markings.

These hoses were manufactured until, at least, 1999 and possibly even 2009, so I expect the year date actually represents something after 1969.
