    1965 headlight housings

I need some advice on removing the headlights. I've already removed the motors, but I can't seem to remove the housings. I have the 1963 manuel, but it doesn't address the removal of the housing. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ernie

    Ernie,
I don't remember having any trouble removing my headlight housings but that was about 1980 when I started my frame-up restoration. Enclosed are some photos from my 1966 illustration catalog that might help. The assembly manual has essentially the same drawings.

You need to remove the 3 bolts on each side of the bucket that hold the shaft supports in place. There is an access hole from the insde of the bucket (see items 15 and 16 in the above photo) that allows you to get a socket on them, and then rotate the bucket around to get to each bolt. Not sure if this is the official way to do it but that's what I have been doing.

Dave, thanks for the drawings, they are better than mine. I guess you slide the housings out the back after removing the four screws from each housing. Is that right?

Yep, slide them both out the back. Here is a pic showing the slots.

Doug, Thank you I took them out today, and after I took the first one out I realized it would be better if I removed the Y piece and it was easier. But it sure is rewarding to get them out and move on.

I have a lot of pictures and directions on restoring the headlight motors and buckets on my '64. We did a Technical Seminar as part of our club and I have a write up that should be published in the Restorer next winter sometime. I can e-mail a large PDF of this write up. Contact me if you need more information. I am a member of the Queen City NCRS in Cincinnati, OH. Good Luck, just watch out for frozen parts, I broke one of my y-stops getting it off the shaft.

Dale, thanks for the offer. If it is not too much trouble I would appreciate a copy. My email is eecopejr@verizon.net.

Ernie, sorry I saw this thread too late. I'm glad that you did'nt have the trouble I had. The factory bubba cross treaded one bolt (the hardest one to reach). A lot of patience and my new vibratory cutting tool got it out. I was able to use my drill press to drill out the remainder of the bolt and then chased the threads with a tap. I took my wife to the shop to show her why I spent all of that money on tools, explaining what a new aluminum bracket would have cost. She was unimpressed.
