    1969 427

I have a question regarding overspray on the exhaust manifolds of an
November 1968 built 427 engine.... the 3RD edition manual is confusing.
Was there overspray or not??? Thanks.

    Ed -

Yes - the exhaust manifolds were on the engine when it was painted.

Overspray, if present, should be very minimal on '68's. Not half the manifold like some we see on the show field.

After 42 years of exhaust heat and the ensuing rust from humidity, I would not expect to see the remnants of hardly any paint left on the manifolds. Now as to how much paint was applied by fire hose in the few minutes the engine spent coming down the Tonawanda line...that is anybody's guess. There was no mask used and it probably depended on the individual worker, and how intent he was to apply paint to the block...especially behind the manifolds. No matter how much paint you manage to apply to your manifolds, most will burn off fairly quickly...if you drive your car. If it is a garage queen...who knows?
