    66 Small Block Starter Solenoid

The latest edition (2010) of the 1966 Judging Manual specifies a solenoild finish of either cadmium or zinc. I believe that the previous edition specified cadmium, zinc or semi gloss black paint. I've seen many that were black paint finished. Is black paint still accepted?

    Dave,

I think they were painted black along with the rest of the starter.. This picture is of what looks like a very original 63 fuelie motor, note the starter details..

        Tim/Wayne,

I spoke with John Pirkle and he says they could be either cadmium or zinc plated or painted semi gloss black. During judging, I've seen them both ways -- plated and painted. It appears that the JM is not completely correct.

I'd go with John's assessment, I don't think anybody has seen more starters than he has. I sure have seen both ways in some old junk yards. I have two with perfect dates for my 66 and one is painted and one cad/zinc. These starters were correct dates for the cars I took them out of so I'm making the assumption they were original and correct.
