    70 windshield replacement

My 70 coupe (long time delamed) windshield finally cracked.

Any advice/suggestion/tips on where to get new date coded glass?

    TIA,
    Mike

Mike if you take your 70 Corvette to a shop for windshield replacement I recommend you inspect your Corvettes windshield frame after the windshield is removed. There may be areas of the frame that need repair before the new windshield is installed.
When my original owner 70 Corvette's windshield was replaced I was a witness to the removal and drove it home without the windshield to repair the frame.

I think that you will find that Pilkenton is the supplier to most, if not all, of the above.

Quick Question. Does Pilkington windshield glass pass muster for judging on a '70?

                Thanks.

If you are considering windshield replacement and concerned about the deduction of the tinting on the glass you should read this thread: https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...glass&uid=8572

I bought a date coded windshield for my 70 from one of the major parts vendors and it was drop shipped direct from Pilkington. My small crack has not grown and I keep passing inspection so it has not been out of the shipping crate.

There is NO glass that has the proper tint banding.

In response to Dicks comment that there is no windshield that has the proper shadeband color....the shadeband color comes from the plastic interlayer that is laminated between the two sheets of glass...the PVB plastic interlayer known as Poly Vinyl Butyral. This material will discolor over time with UV exposure....old windshields all had blue shadebands that discolor to vary colors of bronze over time.....the PVB was made by two companies in the 60's one was Monsanto (now Solutia) and DuPont....Dupont extruded the blue in the PVB and Monsanto printed the blue on the plastic.....in addition, in the 60's PVB was not stretched as it is today....the caliper is .030" and is stretched to .028 and is given a arc stretch in the form of a smile so as not to pucker when placed between two pieces of glass.....I believe originals were 4" at the ends above teh AS1 mark and around 2" in the center...now adays in current production the shadeband is 4" continous. The AS1 mark's were sandblasted as well as logos in those days, some now are silk screen printed with ceramic frit paint or laser etched. Glass was also thicker in the 60's....not to mention the optics were not as good as todays float glass technology.

                            Dino,

From the above explanation it appears that there is no windshield on the market that will not receive point deductions. The question that is still in my mind is if a new windshield was installed with the defects that you mentioned above, how many points would be deduced?
                            Thanks
