    Who Rebuilds Coils?

I'm looking for someone to rebuild an original non TI coil. Does anyone know who rebuilds them?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Re-gut it maybe, rebuild it? If you ever looked at the insides of one, that would be difficult.

Not so much. I knew someone who rebuilt them, but he passed a dozen years ago. I tried, but never was able to find out what happened to his machine -- yes there was a coil re-winding machine back in the day. Tedious work though, and let's not get into what that coolant is inside them.

You betch'ya. Be careful of leaking coils. I have training in handling that stuff, but no one else around here (at work) does anymore, and I kind of keep quiet about that "skill." I probably show up on someone's computer, but I bet (hope) no one is looking any more.

Hmmmm. Have not noticed any signs of acne, or other symptoms. Ya musta dodged the bullet.

I remember them oiling dirt roads in East Texas with transformer oil. Wonder what that was??

                Dave:

The only person I know who does this (or did this) work was Paul Baker of Goat Hill Classics in Long Beach, California. Not certain if Paul is still in business, or does coil work anymore. Most folks today either buy a good used original, or get one of the GM reproductions.

Paul does good work, but has a poor reputation for customer service. You were generally okay if you purchased what he had in stock and could take it with you after the sale. Special orders where you pre-paid for the work in advance were the problem. Proceed accordingly.

The last number I had for him was (562) 437-7664.

I won't tell you what we did with it in the late 1960s when I started this job. At least I won't tell you in print, and here for the world to see. Maybe over a beast in Novi thought.

Dick, in your State they used to oil dirt roads with used motor oil. There was also several instances in the late 70's/early 80's down east where a tranformer oil recycler from New Jersey was dumping his tankers. I walked these areas. PCBs are stable, especially when in oil soaked into dirt. They won't harm you unless you eat a lot of them.

As for coils, I haven't seen any haz waste or RCRA regulations on them, but that doesn't mean that isn't any. However I usually keep up with that stuff. Either there are no PCBs in coils or they have slipped through a crack in the regulations.

a lot was burned in boilers in the day!!! in my tool and die maker apprentice days i machined parts that they used to put the PCBs into a cup with 2 electrodes and adjusted the gap and applied the voltage to see if it arced thru the oil. never had to mess with the oil but someone did.

There is a guy named Skip Haney in Punta Gorda, Florida who rebuilds water pumps and coils. He specializes in early Ford stuff, but when I met him last winter, I think he said that he could do other types of coils as well. I also remembering him telling me that it varied from coil to coil, some being impossible to do, while others were just difficult and expensive. You can contact him at skip@fordsrus.com. From everything I've heard, he does excellent work.
