    Dick,

Yes, I was unaware that C1 number plates were prone to falling off......but that really doesn't alter much as to my opinion. Steve says the car has a home made plate on it. IF a VIN plate fell off of my car I sure as h**l wouldn't consign it to the trash can.....I'd hang onto it as though it were a good sized gold nugget. Steve didn't tell us initially that he knew a good deal about the car's past history. That is more significant to the issue than that the plates were prone to falling off. And to most people the comment about chrome plating the steering column is going to seem a little fishy.........if not to most people, certainly to me. I'd set a new track record in the mile unless the car was very rare and cheap and I just had to have it........John Law be d****d in the bargain. But I'd have some sleepless nights.

Bill, where those tags are located, on the steering column, if they fall of, more than likely they will be lost to the ages. They fall down on the highway.

      Re: Missing number plate

Dick is very right about the vin tags on the steering column falling off. Back in the '70's, a friend of mine was backing his '60 out of the garage and heard a "tinkle". As he backed up a little further, he saw a shinny object on the garage floor, that turned out to be his vin tag. Just a few years before that, I had bought my 1st '62. The vin tag was screwed on to the correct place on the steering column. I didn't think anything of it, as I knew that the earlier C1's vin tags were screwed to the door post. Maybe the wrong thing to have done now. But, I have become paranoid of losing the vin tag on my current '62. I didn't remove it and it appears to be solidly spot welded on the column, but I did sneak some good epoxy under it as a precaution. I have no idea if it will help it stay on, but so far it is solid and I don't mess with it either.

The vin tag on my 62 is solidly spot welded to the steering column, but I did put a nylon wire-tie around it for good measure.

I do too! Easy to remove at a show and replace before leaving. Don H.

Good idea. I'll do that to my '61 today before we leave for Novi on Friday.
