1972 454 BB Valve Rocker Covers

Need/want to replace my valve covers. Currently they are Aftermarket Chrome with correct baffles that I put on 15+ years ago. Starting to rust.

I believe I have the stock covers that came with the engine, put them in storage when I put the chrome on but they do not have the spark plug holders like what CC is showing (see link below)

Need help. Car is a driver but I'm thinking of restoring it soon so I'd like to make sure.

I see those orange 454 valve covers with drippers and the spark plug holders at swap meets a lot. Most are banged up or rusted but every once in a while I see a decent set. Mostly around $20-$50 a pair. I know they are '72 or later as they have the push-in oil cap.

If it were me, I would not want original 1972 valve covers due to the push-in, rubber oil filler. I absolutely HATE those rubber filler plugs.

Joe, I couldn't agree more. Besides being aesthetically not attractive as opposed to prior years with the flash chrome and twist oil cap that hard rubber or plastic plug was the dickens to pull out.

Gorgi, I went back through some photos of Top Flight 1972 Corvettes and none showed having those plug wire holders of that type as depicted in Corvette Central. The correct valve covers appear to be similar to 1970-1971 valve covers except painted orange and has the push-in oil plug. Use the ones you have.

          Gorgi,

If your car is an early build 72 it may have the layover covers from late 71 cars (mine).

The early 71's carried over the flash chrome and then went to the Orange with the OIL plug, but the configuration was the same.... the towers and wire loom placements.

The 72's have the spark plug retainers tack welded on the bottom of the covers like the ones you have shown.

I posted some pictures of a pair of late 71 covers to compare, they have drippers and dimples.

Thanks guys, the pictures helped a lot. My car is an early 1972, Sept71 build. My heads are even 1971 code.

Plan on putting my originals back on, will take some work to get them back to looking good.
