    C2 1965 wiper motor changeover

I have a 65 built in early June, should I have the 63 to early 65 wiper motor or the late 65 to 67 style wiper motor?

Anyone know when the changeover occured?

    Thanks in advance.

    Jimmy,

From my experience of rebuilding a couple hundred WW motors, I think you should have the 602 end cap. But, then again, what do I know?

FWIW, my early (014xx) and late '65 (Aug 2nd) both have 5044602 end cap stampings. Owned for 31 and 23 years respectively; unrestored. Can't speak for what earlier owners might have serviced.

          Wayne,

Have you ever looked at the date codes on the back side of your wiper motors? I bought my 1966 Corvette (Feb. 1966) in 1979 when I knew very little about Corvettes. On the back side of my 5055602 wiper motor there is the number "64" (for 1964) inside a circle as well as the number "22" (22nd week???) also encircled. I assume that the original wiper motor was replaced with a junk yard wiper motor from a 1965 Corvette sometime between 1966 and 1979 but who really knows.

            Dave,

How about checking that number on the end cap once again. Think you will find the number 5044602. And that sounds like the original motor for your 66. Just because it had a 64 and 22 means nothing. It could have had a 62 or a 65. When a casting plant starts cranking out castings they run 10's of thousands in a single run. No such thing as a small batch. That particular casting was used on Chevy, Chevelle, Buick, Pontiac, etc. etc.

              Joe,
The number on the end cap is stamped "5044602" which would be correct for 1965-1967 Corvettes. The housing has a "D-4904635" casting number as well as the encircled "64" and encircled "22" which I believe means the 22nd week of 1964. I agree that they made thousands of housings at a time and it is very possible that a late April-Early May 1964 (22nd week of 1964) housing could have wound up on a factory installed wiper motor on a February 1966 car.

These encircled numbers do mean something.
I once owned a very similar wiper motor stamped "5044363" on the end cap that had a housing with the following casting numbers: "D-4904635", encircled "60", and an encircled "6" (or maybe it was a "9"). I took this wiper motor off a 1960 Chevrolet in a junk yard in Ashburnham, MA, in July 1991. I am 100% certain that the encircled "60" represents the year 1960. I am only guessing that the encircled "6" represents the 6th week of the year (or "9" for the 9th week).

I don't think that it is possible to have a housing with an encircled "64" (for the year 1964) on an original 1962 wiper motor unless someone had access to a TIME MACHINE.

                Dave,

Maybe I didn't get my point across well at all. The date code means only the time it was cast by the thousands. What car in the future that casting is going on would not be known. It could be cast in 64 and installed on a 67 etc. etc. The 6 month, 90 day, or year time frame (in the future) is out the window when that many casting are made at one time. The number on the front of the motor end (cast part) is also of no importance because it's the cavity number in the mold. Any mold might have four, six, eight or more cavities.
