    Trouble installing C1 gas tank

There was a thread not too long ago about how to make a reproduction fuel tank fit in a C1. I did some archive searching, but could not find it. Can someone point me too that thread, or answer the following. What needs to be bent on a new fuel tank in order to make it fit? Is it the front flange against the bulkhead?

The problem I'm having is that the top cover will not seat properly. It is about 1" off.

    Thanks,

    Tom

If I remember correctly I had to bend the corners on the flange which is where the top and bottom of the tank are fastened together.
    Good luck.

Tom, you have to bend up the flange. I used the wide sheet metal type vice grips. Hopefully you still have the old tank. Use it as a guide.

Mine was a 57, yours is similar, but may not be exact. I will tell you, it is a tight fit - it is shoehorned in there. If your top cover will not clear, then the tank is not fully seated on the bottom. In that case the hold down straps will not fit either. Good luck. I made mine fit (Quanta tank), but it took some doing. -Dan-

On my 62s the corners are bent down (as the tank sits in the car) at about a 90* angle. Pull up the thread "Gas gauge" to see pics.

          Dan,

This is a Quanta tank also. I do have the old tank, but not here at the house. I'll go get it over the weekend and use it as a guide like you suggest.

          Thanks,

          Tom

              Tom,

I bought a repop tank from CC; the fit is tight for sure, and I did have to bend the tabs several times for a proper fit. And I had to tap in the portions where the straps fit to ensure a proper factory fit as well.

See picture of the bottom of the repop tank, and after install. The corner tabs on the top part of the picture are bent up, where the tabs on the bottom are bent down. All four strap locations were tapped farther down as well. Ensure you clean the atnk well thoroughly as any little amount of grime or dirt will take up space that will hinder a nice factory fit. Hope this helps.
