    61 270hp Internals For Rebuilt

I Am In The Process Of Rebuilding My 270hp Motor And Heads. I Am A Novice And Have No Clue What To Put In It To Be Correct. I Already Purchased Keith Black 166 Pistons With Eagle I-beam Rods Part Number Eagle Sir 5140. The Cam I Bought Is Speed Pro Cs113r. That Is As Far As I Have Gotten In 3 Weeks Of Research. Motor Is 40 Over And My Crankshaft Is 20/20. Will These Work? And What Should I Do About Heads To Complete Rebuilt. Any Help Would Be Very Very Much Appreciated. Thanks Tim

Tim, if you have the ORIGINAL engine block, I would be giving the block and all the parts to an expert machine shop and engine builder. Make sure that you order a 'MAG' check of the block to make sure there are no cracks inside the block or heads. And then I would even order a dyno check on the completed engine for proper break in and checks for performance.

I know it may be expensive, but you are dealing with a 50 year old engine, and if it is NOT built properly you will be very disapointed. GM knew what they were doing, and stock parts still work best.

I think you're heading in the right direction. It's not clear what rods you bought, but the Eagle SIR5700SP for about $250/set are a good value, not much heavier than OE, and have more than adequate durability.

Your 270 only had an OE CR of 9.5:1, and you can go as high as about 10.3 with modern premium fuel.

You can gain considerably more power by massaging the heads and installing 1.84" inlet valves, and the usable power range will go to about 7000.

See the Fall 2009 and Fall 2010 Corvette Restorer for more information.

If you email me I can also send you a technical paper on engine prepartion.

The above articles/paper are geared specifically to the Special 300 HP 327 configuration, but is generally applicable to all small blocks.
