    c2 rocker molding bracket

I'm restoring a 66 that is a complete ground up. i'm riveting some clips and brakets on when i get to the brackets for the rocker panels. i purchased from lic supply and they supply pop rivets. cant be correct.

can someone take a look at the front bracket at the fender tip and let me know if it a flat backed rivet or rounded back type.
    thanks in advance

Bill, I believe the pop rivet is correct. My very original 66 has them. Let's hear from others tho.

Check your AIM, try Sec1 sheetA4.00. These, in 64 were spot welded.
So it you are concerned about what a judge if seen - then do not rivet at all if they will show.

        Alan,

Me thinks he is talking about the brackets on the end of the rockers. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Here is the substitute for those words.

Alan, I believe he is talking about the small bracket that rivets to the fender tip directly behind the front tire and forward of the side vents. The front lower rocker molding screw screws into this bracket from the bottom. This is the tip that gets cut off for side exhaust.

Here's a few close-up pics of these brackets. Don't know which of the C2 years these came off, but I would guess held on by pop-rivets to the fiberglass.

                Bill,

The pop rivets are indeed correct for that bracket, but the LIC pop rivets are clearly too long. I redid mine about two years ago and the way I got things to look the same as the original was to find pop rivets of the same diameter as the LIC ones, but shorter. Unfortunately, I can't remember how much shorter but I might have some notes or photos somewhere if only I can find them. I'll scout around.

                    Gary,

Any success with the scouting mission? The rivets at LIC look the same length as the ones from CC, too long.

                      Scott,

This morning I found several bags of LIC pop rivets for that application, but the bag contained no extras of the shorter ones I wound up using. I actually think I don't have any extra short ones as I recall that a colleague of mine gave me just five, so I had one to test on some sheet aluminum.

                      Sorry,

                      Gary

                        Scott,

I misspoke in my previous posting. I talked to the person who supplied me with the pop rivets and it turns out the same size I used on my '66 I had mixed in with the longer LIC pop rivets. The type I would us using is:

Dayton No. 4x642; 3/16" diameter; button head rivet, grip range 1/8" to 1/4".

The thickness of the fiberglass + the rocker bracket on my '66 is 0.19", so the 4x642 Dayton rivet is very well suited for that thickness. By contrast, the spec on the LIC rivet gives a maximum grip length of 3/8", which means there is just too much rivet length left over after popping the LIC rivet.

                        Gary
