    Koolmat

Has anyone used Koolmat as an insulator under the carpet? My car is a non A/C , BB with under car exhaust that will probably have high interior temps here in southern CA. Paragon and Ecklers both sell it. I called the manufacturer and they said it should reduce temps by 65-70 % And cut down sound by up to 23 DB. I called Paragon and they said it works better than their ceramic insulator . I guess it should at close to 3 times the price. Also how would this product judge since its not going to be visible? It is very thin and was going to put the jute over it. Thanks for any help

I have used Dynomat with very good results. You can find it on Amazon.com for the best price.

          I have Dynamat in my 57, 62 and 65.
It does cut way down on noise and cabin temperature.
Nice product, easy to install and MADE IN U.S.A.
          Best prices are online.

Wrote a Restorer article on testing floorboard insulation in 2008 and have attached it.

Decided on Hushmat because it was thinner. The Hushmat folks have also donated door prizes for various NCRS event.s

James, thanks. Article's not on the horizon any time soon - too many higher priority things for NCRS are in front of it. Bigger question - when will I get around to finishing my '57. Gary....

                      Re: Koolmat

Part of brad's original question was how these products affect judging? I'm assuming if you look close enough you can figure out if Koolmat or something similar is installed. I assume would there would be a judging hit?

Brad, I intend to install in my 65 this coming fall or winter. I do think Dynamat gives you more bang for your buck but also think the Koolmat will outperform most anything else on the market but it is expensive. We tested this product in a soundlab outside of Charlotte N.C. about 7 or 8 years ago against some other products and it beat them all. At that time there were very few distributors for it and now there are quite a few. We need to shop to find one that will give us a break. I will let you know if I come up with one. Mike

                          Brad,
After reading Gary's article I installed Hushmat in my '59. Works great. Driving here in Oklahoma with 100 degree temps the heat is not coming from the floor.

                            Don and Mike,

Judging - know of several C1's that have received Duntov's without any problems as long as the insulation shinny finish doesn't show. That's one of the reason product thickness was an evaluation point.

Didn't consider Dynamat, as it required 2 different layers for temperature reduction. One of which was a 1/4" (.25) thick. Dynamat is a very good sound dampener.

Was truly disappointed in KoolMat and expected it to do better, especially since a lot of the NASCAR race shops use it.

HushMat was giving NCRS members a discount if you call them and ask for it.

Hi Gary, I am not familiar with the hush mat and I`m not necessarily stuck on Koolmat. We did test it at Technicon in Concord, N.C. some time ago. They do make acoustic and heat barrier insulation but not in this particular market. Or at least not seven years ago. I work for a Marine distributor and they made our 1 to 2 inch barrier insulation for us at that time. Its used in the engine rooms of yachts primarily. They kept my Koolmat samples at Technicon to investigate the market for the product. In your tests what did you not like about the Koolmat and what did you like about the Hushmat. I have a black on black a/c 65 coupe and mainly wanted the best heat deterrent that I could find. Thanks, Mike For some I can not open your link you posted eariler. Mike
