    Jeff,

I don't think your test criteria is correct. Cadmium also bubbles in muriatic acid.

There are a number of pieces where the specs call for cadmium OR zinc.

            Jeff,

Sorry if I sounded critical in my post, it wasn't intended that way.

I do both zinc and cadmium plating in my garage as a hobby. Prior to plating with cad or zinc, I normally clean off my anodes, whether zinc or cad, in muriatic acid. In my experience, I have never noticed a difference in the bubbling between zinc and cad when I dumped them into the muriatic.

If you have some paper or article on your test method, I'd like to review it.
Maybe you are right about the time to bubbling.

In my experience with zinc and cad, it is extremely hard to tell the difference once it is weathered, corroded or dichromated. As Loren says above, there was probably a choice to the vendors of zinc or cad on most parts. But I think parts subject to severe corrosion where probably spec'd in cadmium.
Pretty sure my gas cap was, it sure is now after replating.

I think brake cylinder caps are probably in the same category. Again, mine is now
