      Bart,
Pull the inner cable out at the speedo end.
Lube the first few inches with your choice of grease (white lithium, vaseline, etc) then feed the cable back in the sheath and apply lubricant as you insert the inner cable.
You don,t need lots of grease just a thin coating.
Hopefully this will take care of your problem.
My 57 tach jumps around from time to time and i just reach under the dash move the cable a little and it usually calms down.
Be sure your speedo cable doesn't have any sharp turns in it.

        Bart,
When you choose the lube make sure it won't thicken if the car go's to a colder climate.

If the grease thickens when cold you will loose the cable and possible damage to the spedo.

I know that for sure, I grew up in the midwest. I lubed imy 59 chevy in the summer with regular grease and lost the cable and spedo needle in the winter.

Then moved to CA and drove my pick up to a ski lodge . The next morning when I went to drive to the lift I saw my spedo needle jump and stopped the pick up and disconnected the spedo. It also was lubed with the wrong lube.

I was told by an NCRS speedo restorer to lube the cable at the transmission. Lub will migrate up the cable do to the twist of the cable. If you lub at the speedo it is a short trip to the head.

[Don't count on it. Do it right and take the cable out and lube it.
The lube will NEVER crawl up to the spedo unless there is preasure behind it, twist or not.

Maybe some can pour lube up but try walking on water first.

Take it out and lightly lube it with an approved spedo lube and put it back in spinning it with your fingers to feel if you need to do it again.
