C1 1960 Windshield Install Problem

Hi,

After numerous attempts at installing my new windshield, and before I throw money at it and have it done, I'll ask the experts.

New windshield and post tabs renewed. It assembles fine on my pingpong table but during installation pulls out of the lower rubber when I start tightening the bolts or when I push the molding down to the body.

What am I doing wrong?

The glass measures 18" high at the center, is this right?

Ron, I'm no help, but I also have a 60 that I am restoring and need a windshield. Now that OEM Glass is no longer doing glass, where did you get your windshield.

They are not fun and don't force anything because the corners are very vulnurable to snapping. (Don't ask how I know). I seem to remember a layer of non-hardening but firm putty under mine between the rubber and the body and gently tightening nuts a little at a time pulling it into the putty without overtightening the nuts. you will notice a lot of c-1's have an uneven gap in this area. your next problem will be pulling the top header up when latching the soft-top. I found this whole windshield area to be one of trickiest parts of the restoration.

Latch the softtop to the header 1st, then latch to the decklid. Seems like this was the proper procedure I read somewhere, anyway it has worked for me without pulling the trim loose from the glass and allows for the proper installation on the top pins into the header latch receiver.

Ron, I had a similar problem with my '57. Long and frustrating story, but it turned out that the lower frame was slightly 'tweaked' which prevented the glass and rubber channel from sitting evenly along the cowl. Trying to straighten it merely moved the 'tweak' along. Wound up replacing it, and all went together fine after that.

Search the previous posts. Recently somebody talked about the side frame spacers. I think that may help.
Also, every article that I have read about C1 windshields recomends the modern urethane glue between the glass rubber and frame. This will help prevent the glass frome pulling from the frame.
