    1963 convert: radio, speaker & clock, removal & repair questions

    1963 (convertable), have radio, speaker, clock, removal & repair questions

    have removed the radio, but need assistance on how to get the clock, the radio speaker and dashboard speaker cover out of the car for repair?

    Also, would appreciate suggestions on a good place to send each for repair???

    thank you, Colin Brodie 51038

    Start with the clock. Depress then carefully slide the two clips off of each of the two studs on the back of the clock. You may want to use a long screwdriver to depress the clips... There's a little lip on them that will aid in sliding the clip off of the stud. Carefully disconnect the power lead and rock the two light sockets out of the housing. It should easily come out through the front.

    Ugh, now the speaker. I used a very long (16") extension on my 1/4" drive socket to remove the nuts at the four corners of the speaker. I believe I had to use a swivel socket on the forwardmost nuts. Disconnect the speaker lead plug (green and black wires) then drop the speaker.
    The grill comes out in a similar manner with removal of the nuts holding the grille to the dash. Just take your time and take some breaks. Oh, and make sure there are no small kids around to hear your colorful vocabulary while you're upside down under there.

      My kids were near by (one helped the other ran away) back in the mid 70's. I think it shaped their entire lives (skewed), and my wife has yet to forgive me for it. Claims I earned their respect out of fear, but that was before I went senile.

        S&M Electro Tech is a good place to send the radio and the speaker (although I am not for sure that they rebuild speakers). They can rebuild the radio or they can put new elctronics in it to make it and AM/FM stereo (with all the hookups, etc). I think they charged around $170 for a repair and around $400 for the new innerds. They have done a good deal of work for me and these are some good folks. I have a radio out of a Corvair up there now and they told me the wait time would be around 10 weeks.

          Colin;

          Looks like you have the information on how to remove the clock, speaker and grill. As far as radio repair; AM or AM/FM the only guy I would use is Jerry Rudbeck, ElectroDesign. (WWW.electrodesign.US). The man is an artist, and your radio will come back sounding just like it did in the day. Depending upon what speaker you have in there (an incorrect speaker will sound lousy at best and can cook your radio at worst) Jerry can send you to a guy (in Minnesota as I recall) who makes exact reproductions (physical and electrical). I've used Jerry for my 1963 Wonderbar and my 1965 AM/FM and perform great!

          Good luck, Joel
