When an NCRS member number is no longer used (death of member or drop out) is it recycled or does it just become dormant? Reason I'm curious is.......... I bought my first Corvette in late '75, a '75 coupe with a coupla' thousand miles, local trade in. The next year I bought my first '63 coupe, a project I'd been chasing for several years. I'd have bet the farm that I joined NCRS then. I know at one point when I went back to boat racing as the main hobby I didn't renew for a year or two, or maybe even longer, but it's hard to believe '82 was the first time I joined. Just wonderin'.............

Re: Curious about obsolete NCRS member numbers
They are not recycled, but when you first joined there was a different numbering system, or at least there was when I joined. The first two numbers were the year you joined, '82 in your case, and then the last three digits were the order your joined in, I.E. say 725.
The current numbering system came into effect sometime in the late '80's or early '90'sDick Whittington- Top

Re: Curious about obsolete NCRS member numbers
I think there was a thread about this a while back. If I remember right (dangerous to do) at some point they went back and tried to recreate them or something to that effect. I've never heard the thing you said about the year you join being in the mix. Don H.- Top

I joined back in the 70s around 75-76 let my membership lapse for years, renewed my membership a few years ago maybe 2004 and got my original number back- Top

Re: Curious about obsolete NCRS member numbers
Norris,
Your current #6136, is probably about right for a 1982 join date. I joined in late 79 or 80 and I'm #4067. Actually, there was a previous lower number but I didn't renew on time, same as you.
When I rejoined, I asked if I could have my original number. Someone looked in the files and found the #4067 number.
I've rejoined several times over the decades but always ask for my original number.
If you were a member in 1975, I suppose it's possible that you may have had a three digit member number.- Top

Re: Curious about obsolete NCRS member numbers
One of the Mortimers will give us the full story, and I think it is in the archives because i recall going through this before.
I joined in September 1980. I had a different, lower number at that time. A few years later all the numbers were juggled. The story was that they had been recycling numbers so not everyone was in chronological order. The reassigned numbers were to be in chronological order.
I don't ever remember a numbering system like Dickie presented, but maybe they gave all those Southerners different numbers than us Yankees. Or there were special Smurff numbers.Terry- Top

Re: Curious about obsolete NCRS member numbers
Gentlemen, I think, that is dangerous, that originally, circa 1981, when a member dropped out for whatever reason, his number was recycled to a new member. Then sometime after I joined in 1981, a new numbering system was instituted wherein you got an original number and the older numbers were retired. I think that I originally might have had my number changed to my current 4489-1981.

Re: Curious about obsolete NCRS member numbers
I joined in 4/1/77. Here's what I found in my NCRS library:
Driveline #1 1978: no number or date on mailing labels
1980: Join date now on mailing labels (4/77)
1981: no more join date on labels
1984: member no. (2775 for me) and expiration date on labels
1990: member no. changed to 1350
I looked for an explanation of the member number change, but couldn't find it.- Top
