    Dating engine stamp fonts?

I ran across this interesting description of the engine stamping on a '67 L71 for sale:
"The "font" on the engine stamping is accurate according to those who have those records. Yes, stamps broke on the assembly line and were recorded as to what days they were changed out, so you can prove from the car's build date what FONT should be on the stamping"
    Is that true?

    Michael,

Not that I know of. The stamp tool was only a holder for all of the individual stamp characters.

If the tool failed, it would be replaced immediately with another of the same type. It had to be the same so the individual characters would fit.

There were small trays with many stamp characters in each compartment and as the VIN or date changed, a different character would be installed in the holder. It would be unlikely that the same character slug would be used over and over so it's possible that a slightly different style character could be used randomly.

So who is the person that thinks those font records exist?

Better pull the head and see if that pad is crooked! Let alone sanded in broach marks that end 1" in under the head

This is from a very pricy eBay listing, it also states this: "this 435hp L-71 still has its original broach marks UNDER the engine stamping". Impressive huh?

That settles it, then, since we all know eBay listings are never incorrect.

I say BS to his claims. I am not an expert and do not claim to be, nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn last night

In the 70's I worked for a brake and clutch lining manufacturer that included OEM's and the govt. as customers and we had federal guidelines on stamps---and with these federal guidelines and company guidelines there were none about recording when we changed stamps and tooling. I wonder if they know if all other component stamps (instruments, stencils, glass, soft pieces, etc.) have recorded stamp changes or if there is real documentation? As with other parts of that listing there is a strange haze lingering.

If the seller is so sure the stamp pad is correct, I have to wonder why he didn't post a good picture of it.

The last time it was on ebay i asked to see a photo of the engine stamp and didn't get a reply.Usually if someone explains the whole stamping process in their ad you can pretty much count on it to be "not typical"...actually $600k
for a repainted, unjudged 67 isn't typical either...I remember 20 years ago this car was for sale at a dealer on Long Island...

I of course agree with all you guys, I don't have your experience with the engine stamping process but these claims just don't pass the logic smell test. I am also curious how the broach marks can be seen UNDER the stamp. Very odd, maybe an electron microscope was used and the marks are that deep?

Not only is the engine stamping documented as to when the holder may have broken, but any buyer of this car will be saving $175k as the price is lowered from $775k to $600...
