7028209fg quadrajet choke on my 68 is not working. Can somone tell me how it works. I have to pump it to get it to start when cold. If I push the flap to the choke position it starts right up.

Re: 1968 7028209FG quadrajet carb. choke
Generally speaking, Q-jets use a thermostatic coil in the intake manifold to close the choke. is yours there and connected? That is the first place to start if the choke blade is not closed when the engine is cold. Possibilities range from missing parts to incorrect part (thermostatic spring in the manifold or incorrect length for from the thermo coil to the arm on the carb that activates the choke. The normal cold engine start choke position is full closed, and that is why the starting instructions in the owners manual say to pump the throttle once before cranking the engine. That releases the choke blade to reset to the closed position.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Thanks Bill, my spring is missing. I think I have one on a old carburetor.- Top

Re: 1968 7028209FG quadrajet carb. choke
The spring is held in the manifold with a screw, unless the '69 uses an exhaust manifold heat tube. I'm not that familiar with '69 cars, but I know my old '72 used a manifold spring and rod that connected to the choke.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 1968 7028209FG quadrajet carb. choke
No heat tube was used. 1969 is essentially the same as 1972 with one exception. 1969 used a choke stove that was integral with the manifold with a separate choke thermostat (coil). 1972 used a choke stove that was integral with the thermostatic coil and attached to a flat surface on the manifold. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

In that case, I'd say he needs to start with the spring and work up to the carb to find his problem, especially if he can manually set the choke.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Bill-----
Yes, and if I were he, I'd start with a NEW choke thermostat of known proper application. Why throw another unknown into the mix of things for the few bucks that one of these costs? The part is GM-discontinued but easily available in the aftermarket and the aftermarket piece is virtually identical to the original GM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Bill, I installed the choke spring on the intake and also had the linkage. It works perfect. Thanks for the information.- Top
