    67 Windshield Information

I have a question concerning the data on my 67 coupe winshield. Looking to replace my windshield and had contacted Pilkington Classic Glass. Gave them the information for proper date code etc as shown below. They called back and identified that they have never seen the following identification : E-Z EYE

The info on windshield is as follows:
    E-Z EYE
    SHADED
    SOFT-RAY
    SAFETY L PLATE
    AS1 O UA
    F
    LAMINATED
    M-4
Is this an exception and only a few had this? Car is # 276 and built first week of production in Aug 66.
Just trying to validate. They said they would etch it in ,but were nice enough to have a questioning attitude, which is good!
Thanks in advance for any feed back

I have a very late '66 with a mid-July build date ... the tinted windshield is coded as your post, but without the 'E-Z EYE' line. (Assume that your LOF is in an etched box & diagonal).

      Michael,

My car was produced Jan. 11, 1967 and has all the original glass except driver's side door glass. The windshield is tinted, and dated "VA" for December, 1966. It has the "LOF" logo in the center of the markings, with "SHADED" over "SOFT-RAY" above the "LOF" logo.

"LAMINATED" is over "M 4", both below the "LOF" logo.

"SAFETY" over "AS1" to the left of the "LOF" logo.

"PLATE" over "VA" to the right of the "LOF" logo.

See the attached diagram for an example of the markings.

        Michael,

I checked Alan Colvin's "Corvette by the Numbers", and this is what it says about the "E-Z Eye" logo:

"The EZ Eye logo was never used on Corvettes. It was only used on Passenger car vehicles. The Safety Float logo was never used as original equipment glass, only as a replacement glass. It should be mentioned here that the EZ Eye logo is a LOF trademark for the green tinted glass. The GM trademark is Soft-Ray. All parts today sent as Original Equipment to GM would have the Soft-Ray trademark. While EZ Eye may have been used early on in the monogram on the green tinted products going directly to GM, it was eventually replaced with Soft-Ray trademark. Today, the EZ Eye logo is in place of the SoftRay trademark on automotive glass replacement parts." (p. 549)

          Scott

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post. Looking to see if any other information surfaces.
This car has always been locally owned. I'm the fourth owner and I know two of the previous owners. They both have told me none of the glass had ever been replaced. None of the glass appears to have ever been removed, based upon condition of the glass and surrounding components. It seems odd the date code and everything else is correct. If I can't prove it should be there, I will not have them etch it in.
The neat thing is when I was fourteen and walking to High School I walked past this car every day at a local business. Four years ago I was looking for a C2 and a friend identified that he knew of an older corvette that had been stored in a garage not 8 miles from me. It had been in storage for 25 years, with an inch of dust and dirt covering it. I couldn't beleive it when we discovered the car. Entire car appears to be original with exception to the heater hoses and clamps, all other entities are correct per numbers etc. Unfortunitly the glass has scratchs from ice scappers, a few chips and wiper smears. I've tried several methods to clean up and just can't get what I'm looking for. The glass at this point would detract from the rest of the restoration. Performed a frame off restortaion due to the amount of deterriation from setting in an inappropriate storage for 25 yrs. Has been an interesting journey.

          Thanks again for the information.

          Michael

            Michael,

It's great that you found the same car after all these years. The '67 I'm working on was also stored in less than optimal conditions, and it is definitely an interesting journey.

I remembered something today that John Hinckley mentioned a while back, about an article on OEM glass published on the Camaro Research Group website. I found it again, searched for "Eye", and found the following:

            "Supplier and non-GM OEM Tradenames

Glass supplier tradenames, like "Duplate," "Solex," "E-Z-Eye," and "SunShade" do not appear on GM OEM glass. Glass tradenames from other OEMs also obviously did not appear on GM glass. For example, "Safeguard," which is a Chrysler Corporation (now DaimlerChrysler) tradename for Chrysler glass. "

            Here is the link:

You might also check with the 1967 Team Leader Nick Culkowski, to find out if he has ever seen an original Corvette with the "E-Z Eye" logo, just to be sure. His contact info is on the inside cover of the Restorer Magazine.
