70 A/C compressor and bracket finish?

Should the compressor be a flat black or satin. The brackets and pulley semi-gloss black?

        Domenic,

The bolts at the rear of the compressors---they look natural. Is thiis correct for NCRS judging or should they be painted they same as the compressor. I am refinishing my compressor from my '72 and want to do it correct.

The units in the picture look great.

        Your comments would be appreciated.

        Thanks.

          Jerome,
The 4 nuts at the back plate are painted with the compressor but the bolts that hold the mounting plates on the front and back are not.

Rustolium is the best on these but it is only good under the hood out of the sun. It holds up to heat even though the new cans say different, but it fails with ultra violet from the sun, starts getting oxidized. So it's good under the hood.

Most bolts I have seen are black oxide grade 5 & 8.

If I didn't answer your Q completely then ask again.

            Thanks for the feedback.

Do you know what year cars the compresors came off of?

I am rebuilding/refinishing the unit from my '72.

                Jerome,

If you are asking about those in my picture I can tell you what year the back plates are.

The compressor parts in rebuild are all mixed the same was they mix starters at the rebuild shops.

The ones in the pictures all have C2 back plates and one outer housing is a early C2 housing that is matched to a 1963 compressor.

What is the date code on the back of your compressor?

                  Jerome,
I read this post and would say that if you look at an original compressor you are looking at old faded paint that has aged over the years. That is if it is not a picture of a new compressor back in the day.

                    Dom,

The numbers on the back of my compressor are:

                    1) R15 or D15: --- Date codes?

                    2) 61 --- inside an oblong shape

                    3) 6556406 --- part number I assume

Sorry for not to getting back to you sooner, but the car is at a remote location

Can you give me some insight on these numbers?

                      Jerome,
My guess is that that is D15.

If you do not have the thermal plug on the back it would be April 1, 1965

If you do have the plug then I would think the backplate is April 1, 1975.

                        Thanks Dom.

                        My car is '72.
                        1. When did the thermal plug first appear? If you know.
                        2. I assume D=April - 1=1st day of the month - 5= the fifth year of the decade. Is this correct a correct assumption
                        3. Is the date only a 3 character code? Or would they poosibly be 4 (m/dd/y or mm/d/y) and/or 5 (mm/dd/y).
                        I apprecate your input.

                        Thanks

                        Jerry

I don't know for sure when the plug first appeared.

But the date code is M/dd/y .
