calling all orig tinted 63 window glass owners

Hi all need some input on 63 tinted glass cars, if you have a 63 car with tinted glass (orig to the car only) I would like to know if M54 is etched on the glass (bottom line). Could you include the glass code and car month build. Thank you very much Phil 8063

Re: calling all orig tinted 63 window glass owners

      Phil;

Mine is a July 9 build, ordered with A01A Tinted Glass (Convertible).

      NO M54 on bottom line.

      Windshield: AS-1 XC

      Left Side window: AS-2 JC

Left Side Wing Window: AS-2 ?? (can't read, under sticker)

      Right Side Window: AS-2 XC

Right Side Wing Window: AS-2 XC

The only window I had trouble with was the right side door window which dropped down out of the channel, but was not replaced (fixed).

In addition, I re-glazed both side windows and rebuilt the wings in about 1976, but still all original as delivered glass.

Anything else I can check for you?

April build, all glass codes are XC (Feb. 63). No M54 on any of them.

When LOF made the DW00636 (1963-67 Corvette coupe and convertible) windshield, It was only made in Green Tint with a blue shadeband or it was made in clear glass....of course side glass was either green tint or clear

The M numbers represent the NHTSA FMVSS 205/ANSI Z26.1 reference to how the windshield and side glass construction is made. My records show that LOF made the following M number cosntructions and had approval for them in the 60's

          M3 was on clear windshields
M4 was on green tint blue shaded windshields
M54 was on all color tempered glass

I would continue to research known originals.

I have a 1st week July coupe. None of the glass has M54.
Codes are: left side window - AS2 GC
            Left wing AS2 XC
            Right side AS2JC
            Right wing. AS2 XC
            Back driver side AS2 LC
            Other side AS2 JC

            Windshield is replacement.

Spoke with LOF (Pilkington) yesterday and he stated that LOF began using M numbers in 1964/1965.

Were they done this way so that one window would read right if you were sitting in the car or standing outside? But why would they etch one side on the inside and the other side on the outside? Inquiring minds want to know.

After reading this went and looked at my 63. Although not tinted, my side glass is just like this as well. I always thought someone had replaced one or more of the glass pieces in the past and didn't get exactly the right piece. My car is an October 62 car with August and September glass.

Off the top of my head I'd say the glass used was flat (not curved) and chances are you could use either pane of glass on either side of the car. When I had mine re-glazed, I had to be careful even for front vs. rear. Not sure, but what that was the same as well. I'll have to look.
