    Roger,

I use a kitchen jar-opener-rubber thingy to grab the outer round chrome bezel and unscrew it. If it's corroded in you may need penetrating fluid.

Roger - Rich's suggestion is a good one and it will avoid scratching the paint on the compartment door.

If the nut is stuck, another option is to take the door off and then on the bench looking at the back side of the door and lock case you'll see 2 rectangular holes (1 at 12 o'clock & the other is at 9 o'clock still looking from the back) near the front of the lock case where it steps down. You can see one of the holes in Rich's second photo.

Next using the key turn the lock to the unlock position, remove the key, push in slightly on the push button and then using a paper clip, small screw drive, or dental tool push down on the top of the "keeper" (it looks like a tumbler) and hold it down while pulling on the push button and the push button, lock cylinder can be removed out the front of the case.

Now you can get a better grip on the nut and hopefully remove it or you can use a large Allen wrench or a chisel with an 8 sided shank and a Crescent wrench to remove the"stubborn" nut.

      Have fun.

Pete, That's great info. I never knew that. I just did it on the bench here and it worked easily. A little wiggling after you push on the "keeper" and the lock cylinder came right out. Reinsertion just the opposite. Tighten the nut and insert the cylinder, push the keeper in and it's in.

A few more pics below for reference.

Rich - Glad it worked out. Great photos.

It looks like someone worked on the nut without removing the lock cylinder first.

If you haven't already, check on the lock cylinder because if it's an original, they usually have the KEY NUMBER stamped on them. Usually, the SERVICE replacement and reproduction ones don't.

Yes.....a prior owner/bubba used pliers on it. The cylinder is original with the keycode stamped in near the bottom.

Here's the tool we used in the plant to install/remove the bezel - octagonal bar stock welded to a socket.

                  Pete -

That's the St. Louis toolroom version - nowhere near as expensive as the Snap-On version.

Cool tool John!..... you should put that up "For Rent" in the Driveline.
