    Looking for a fan

    In case anyone knows anyone...?

I'm hoping to find a #3969926 fan, the "shark tooth" fan used with 1970 LS-5's with air. I put an ad in the Driveline (will show late fall), but I wondered if anyone here knew of someone who might part with one. Promise I'll give it a good home. One of the few dated (and missing) parts I need. I think.

Well, there is this air filter thing, too, but they're apparently just as hard to find, and just as costly. Been interesting to read that recent thread.

I'm very well aware that this fan is rare and expensive.

I do have a 1971 fan I'll run with if I can't find one. Different clutch and water pump, but at least it'll look correct. Not for judging of course.

    Re: Looking for a fan

    Kenn,

I have had many fans over the last 30 years but never had the one you are looking for. According to my notes I saw a very unusual 7-blade fan (made by the Schwitzer Company) at the swap meet at Cypress Gardens (space # 418) in Jan. 1993 that was stamped "3969926" and "D70" (April 1970). Apparently the fan was only used on 1970 Corvettes w/454 & AC. It was removed from service in Nov. 1970 according Chevrolet Parts History.
    Good luck in your search.

    Dave

Yep, that's the one. The PIM claims it was decomissioned in May 1970, but either way it's a difficult fan to find. Your source sounds more authoritative, and if so there may be more units out there than I originally thought. That could be good news. Thank you, Dave.

I was privileged to see a 1953 car this weekend, #261. Top Flight and amazing. If I'm getting a little disheartened looking for this part, I can only imagine what it would be like to find parts for a car like that.

      It's a hobby and it's for fun...it's a hobby and it's for fun...it's a hobby and it's for fun... Deep breath.

As Dave mentions, the 3969926 was discontinued without supercession in November, 1970. However, it was soon afterwards replaced for SERVICE by GM #3993889. The latter parts was discontinued without supercession in October, 1984 (and was not subsequently "rescued" by another part number). As a matter of fact, it's very possible the 3993889 was used in PRODUCTION for very late 1970's after about May, 1970.

Both of the above parts are applicable ONLY to 1970 Corvette with LS-5 and C-60. Being that the 3969926 was discontinued after such a short life, you can imagine how difficult it will be to find.

Even the 3993889 is difficult to find although it was available in SERVICE for a lot of years (about 14). I have a friend who once purchased about 10 of these fan blades not too long after they were discontinued. He's sold them all now, though. The last one went about 10-12 years ago for $500. I could have bought it from him for a bit less, but I didn't want it.

          Thank you, Joe. Great information.

Now I'm wondering what other cars used the 3993889. If a few, at least you'd think you could hit a junkyard and find one. Thinking things like, oh, Novas, or other Chevy family cars. ??? They certainly weren't used on Corvettes to my knowledge, but my knowledge is somewhat limited.

          I'll have to research that...

            Kenn,

My 1970 Hollander lists GM # 3969926 as the fan for the 70 Corvette 454 w/AC (Hollander part # 278).

As Joe mentioned, even the 3993889 was ONLY used on the 70 Corvette 454 w/AC, nothing else, as per my 1975 Hollander (also Hollander part # 278) which covers all makes & models.

Enclosed is a photo of my real rough sketch of the shape of a blade on the 3969926 fan.

              Kenn,

It will not make you feel any better, but see my most recent post on this thread. There is a relationship.

                Re: Looking for a fan

Ah, yeah. As soon as I posted that last one, I wondered if it was just a part you could order to replace a fan, say from accident damage, versus used for 14 years on other cars. If I only had stopped into a Chevy dealer in 1983... Who knew. I'm sure all of us remember such parts. Thanks, Dave.

That would explain a lot, Terry, you're right. As a kid I used to collect beer cans...would scour dumps and things for them. Harmless fun. But I should have been looking for fans.

Well, I have this 3992095 fan I can use cosmetically, and hopefully functionally (overheating). Meanwhile, to the swap meets I go. Who knows...maybe I'll even find a good original AC212W filter while I'm at it.
