The main issue what is under the dash that makes it start while pulling on the wires to the ignition switch.

It sounds like the contacts inside the switch are not making contact unless you put pressure on them. Nothing on the backside of the dash puts stress on the wires to keep them tight. The connectors should hold the contacts on the rear of the switch in place. another posibility is a broken wire(s) or loose crimp(s).- Top

Al, instead of pulling on the harness try the wiggling the connectors while turning the key,,it sure sounds as there is a voltage drop across one of the brass terminals, the starter solenoid will need full battery voltage.
Also if you own a voltage meter check to see what the voltage is at the starter solenoid with out pulling the wire. should see battery voltage there when turning the key to start.
