The main issue what is under the dash that makes it start while pulling on the wires to the ignition switch.

It sounds like the contacts inside the switch are not making contact unless you put pressure on them. Nothing on the backside of the dash puts stress on the wires to keep them tight. The connectors should hold the contacts on the rear of the switch in place. another posibility is a broken wire(s) or loose crimp(s).

I would think it would be the wires behind the dash, may or may not be connected properly, or like you said they maybe broken or loose. The switch is brand new.

Al, instead of pulling on the harness try the wiggling the connectors while turning the key,,it sure sounds as there is a voltage drop across one of the brass terminals, the starter solenoid will need full battery voltage.

Also if you own a voltage meter check to see what the voltage is at the starter solenoid with out pulling the wire. should see battery voltage there when turning the key to start. ( terminal should be the (S).? the other is (I ).not the battery cable.

The switch gets it power from the ammeter the wire may be loose broken or the crimps bad also. A place to look at also.

If its is just a bad/broken wire you should be able to repair or replace the wire without removing the guage. The wires are held on by screws at the back of the guage.
