The first place to look would be your 1976 Judging Guide and Technical Information Manual.

The stencilled frame numbers are usually the frame part number plus a dash followed by a suffix number. The part number portion of this series will be found in the frame section of your 1976 AIM (UPC 2, Sheet 1). The frames were different for automatic and manual transmission cars due to the bolted or welded crossmember.

Also, Quanta sells stencil kits for most 53-82 Corvette frames. I believe they have the correct information for any given year and application. So, since you will need a stencil kit if you are to restore the stencils, it might be as simple as a call to Quanta.

Quanta kits end with 1972 but they have capability to create a stencil for later model years if the buyer can provide part number, suffix, frame date, color and alphanumeric size. I'm attempting to recreate a 78 stencil but estimating the suffix requires some guesswork.

I've read somewhere (possibly here) the suffix is the A. O Smith lot number. A.O. Smith manufacture date is the second line.

81 shown. 76 would be similar although possibly not identical. 301 after the date is the lot number.

The 1978 configuration differs from 1980 and I suspect 1976 was closer to 1978. In 1978, the lot number followed the part number, as suggested by JL; the color was yellow and the letter size was 3/4 inch...much smaller than that shown in the 1980 photograph.

I don't think we made your task easy but hopefully you understand the scope of the project to study and identify what was your frame stencil part number and date code. It's what makes this hobby so much freakin fun!
