    1972 a/c compressor nut finish

There are 4 nuts on the back end (opposite pulley end) of the a/c compressor.
Did they originally have a zinc finish or were they painted black like the compressor body? I Have seen them finished both ways.

Is there a judge in the house?

    Help will be appreciated. Thanks

The four nuts have silver (zinc?) finish not black on my compressor. 5/10/72 build

      Thanks for both pictures.

So... the implications this leads to are that the compressor was NOT painted after assembly?? that the rear head and main case were painted as individual components prior to assy??

Seems highly unlikely to me. You would have to give attention to keeping paint off the sealing surfaces of the rear head. What's the point?

I say those nuts should be painted.

I have to agree with Mike, I haven't seen any that were not painted as a unit, or any plated nuts either.

But there is not a lot of info on these and the rebuilders may use new nuts with old paint.

Mike, Your thoughts make sense. However, Kevin's picture, as well as the other pictures he has of his 72 (see links in his profile) do suggest the nuts have a silver (zinc?) finish.

I tend to think original units from Chevrolet came with the zinc colored nuts. But Mike's and Dom's thoughts make reasonable sense.

Maybe, Joe Lucia or others can offer up an opinion as to the finish of the nuts and the reason(s) why they were either painted or left unpainted.

They are painted on my May build 71.

                Jerry,

The others are correct! I just took a closer look and there are some small remnants of paint left. Funny how the paint is chipped off, just on the nuts?
