The 68/69 TIM & JG revision team members would like to thank all the 68 convertible owners for your recent help regarding under dash braces. It has been most helpfull so, again, thank you.

Now we have one more question for ALL 1968 owners (coupes and convertibles).

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Re: 1968 Door Handles

    Hi Mark,

My Dec '67 (E08) build car has type # 2 door handle.

My driver side handle broke about 10 years ago but I still have it. The passenger side handle most likely is more reliable on the survey as it was not used as much and probably survived without replacement.

Mark. The #1's are on my Jan 22 (9643) built car. My guess is that #2 is the earliest, #1 is next and #3 is late.

#1 and the one on the drivers side door recently broke. Lasted 40 plus years but somehow that doesn't ease the pain.

You are lucky, Daniel. That is the one that we have found was the weak design and most often replaced.

Are there any embossed numbers to be seen anywhere on the #1 and #2 handles? It appears that at least the #1 has some sort of embossment but I can't discern it in the photo.

Joe, I see ??404 on the first one. I believe that the GM service #'s ended in 693 and 694?

The '693' and '694' were the 3rd design handles. However, '404' does not work for either the 1st or 2nd design part numbers

                        Joe,

I'm not sure where the pic originated. It may have been Bill Vyn or Terry Buchanan. Reba might know.

                          Joe,

On style #1, I have seen two number, 68405 and 68404. Perhaps this is the difference in right and left handle.

On style #2, the number is 68404 and there is no other numbers on the handle. It also has L or R on the inside base.

The pictures that Mark posted are not mine.

They must be manufacturer's part or ID numbers since they do not represent GM part numbers nor are they a derivative of any 68-69 GM part number that I've been able to find.

Curiously, there were 3 sets of part numbers used for the door handles over the 1968-69 period, exactly as many sets as there are examples in the photograph. Based upon what I do know and what's been reported by 1968 owners so far, I'd say it's like this:

                            style #2= GM #3922017, 3922018

                            style #1= GM #3942715, 3942716

                            style #3= GM #3962693, 3962694

I do not think that style #3 was ever originally used on any 1968 Corvette but I would not completely rule it out for very late cars.

                              My Dec.'67 (E) convertible both handles are #2. One has cast 68404 R and a C within a triangle. The other one is 68405 L also a C within a triangle.
