    Removing Original Tire Valve Stems

Can anybody tell me how to successfully do this so they can be re-used?

    Thanks,

Mark, it all depends upon if the rubber is degraded. Rotted or cracked are probably bad before they are removed. I would try lubricating with a non oil based material so it does not absorb into the rubber.

      Mark,

You probably know the standard method or valve stem removal is to destroy them. Cutting with a pair of side cutters is the usual method. I have never seen or read of any means of removing them intact, but some means of folding the top ridge back into the hole and pushing them back into the tire would be the only chance I can think of.

Soapy water is the usual rubber lubricant used in mounting tires. Any liquid dish washing soap you have around should work. Say, 50/50 with water is a good ratio.

Looks like I'll be searching for five original valve stems.

A tool is made to screw on the threads, using it's bar or another like a tie rod end seperator will pull valve stem thru after lubricating, you can inspect and reuse if not cracked or dry rotten, using the same tool to reinstall. You will probably be better to install new valve stems, they are about two bucks each at your parts store. Steve

Mark, what year is your car? So I can answer your question about if original valve stems are available. Thanks

                      Mark,
                      Terry nailed it.

I tried to remove them and most broke using STP, silicone and other lubes.

I was able to get a few out only to find them fail in a few years, They broke at the rim from rotating force. No hub cap to hold stem.

I think we are stuck with new rubber stems if we want to drive fast and be safe.

Somewhere in this great empty space on my shoulders, I seem to remember a Corvette Restorer article on stems and caps. I do not have my CD handy right now, but maybe someone else does.

From memory, I believe it is the TR#413 shown in the link Terry posted.
