I've recently had deduction points on my ignition shielding because some of the shielding is magnetic. The top shield appears to be stainless steel, however the upper part is non magnetic, while the sides are magnetic. I was also told that the drivers side shielding should also be non magnetic, while the passenger side should be magnetic. What's correct ???

As far as I know, the entire top shield is stainless steel, although some of the components may be a higher grade of stainless which would make it non magnetic. Stainless with less than around 10% chrome added to the steel will be somewhat magnetic.
The left vertical shield is chrome plated steel while the right vertical is stainless steel.- Top

Re: 63 ignition shielding
Carl,
Thanks for confirming that your top shield is similar to mine. I'm sure that my shield is original also. I also have the rivets which appear to be magnetic, however it may be because the washers on the underside are cad-steel. I recently got some aluminum rivets from Zip products with a new insulator which I have yet to install. The washers in the package are magnetic.........Joe- Top

Re: 63 ignition shielding
FWIW, my 63 is very original when it comes to the shielding because I know I never changed them or had a reason to since I took delivery in August 1963. The top plate, as others have stated, is Stainless non-magnetic. The only other piece that is non-magnetic is the rear driver's side plug shield. All others are magnetic including the rivets on the top shield. The only change I made to the top shield was to coat the inside of the rivets with RTV to prevent any potential spark arching from the plug wires to the rivets.
