    1960 Powerglide Question

After two and 1/2 months, it was time to add ATF to the PG and see what happened. I did not drain the torque converter. The 1961 Passenger Car Manual said to add 3.5 quarts of ATF, run the engine at 800-1,000 RPM until PG was warmed up and check the dipstick. There was nothing on the dipstick so I added two more quarts and there is still nothing on the dipstick. I have added a total of 6 quarts and when it is completely drained it holds 10.5 quarts.

I don't know what to do now.

Keep adding ATF until it shows full on the dipstick?

    or

Drive it a few miles and check the dipstick periodically?

    Joe,
How much ATF did you drain?

Usually the trans won't work a few Qts low.

10.5 Is almost max that the trans holds.

I don't remember if the old cast iron had a overflow as the newer transmissions do but untill they got within a few Qts of full the car would not move.

I don't know how much I drained since a lot of it went on the garage floor. My aim was bad on placing the drain bucket in the correct spot. Then when I removed a side cover, more would pour out, usually on me; then the reverse servo piston popped out and more ATF poured on me.

I am going to double check to be sure that I inserted the dipstick tube deep enough into the side cover when I removed it and replaced the o-ring. Tonight, I pulled the dipstick and there was an inch of fluid at the bottom. I never drove the car after starting it on Saturday.

I will start it on Monday, warm up the PG and check the dipstick again; maybe then take it out for a few miles. I am in uncharted territory here (over my head).

        Joe,

At one time we all got a bath like that

Those that didn't will some day.

Update: I added an additional 2 quarts for a total of 8 quarts and the ATF level is even with the Full mark. I did not drive it but shifted it back and forth into reverse and drive. Shift into reverse is smooth, but shift into Drive is hard. I believe it is safe to drive now.

Even thouigh you did not drain the converter the Powerglides are know for the converter drain back.So the converter may have drain back some fluid. There is a check valve in the valve body for this. So you need to add fluid till it shows full.
