    1960 Neutral Safety Switch Problem

I removed my fully functional NSS to replace the governor gasket. I re-installed the NSS and spent at least 3 hours trying to get it mounted correctly so that the car only starts in N & P. I was not successful.

I checked the archives and the 1961 passenger car repair manual and found no useful instructions on how set it up so that it works properly. Io make it work. During my many attempts, the closest I got to correct was where the car would start in N and P, but also in R. I could not duplicate that effort later in the evening!

What am I missing here? Anyone have a good method to make the NSS work correctly?

Update: I adjusted the NSS and it now starts in P, R, and N, but not in D or L. That is as good as I can get it.

Joe, When I rebuilt my '61 NSS, I recall that there where 3 tangs inside which were not evenly spaced. If you have your connecting rods set correctly, is there a chance that the switch lever to rod rotated 180 degrees. The 60 and 61 are a little different but the same principle.

Las, not exactly sure what you mean. The small connecting rod from the NSS to the top of the PG is in the same orientation as it was when I removed it. The difference is the way the NSS is oriented. The NSS has elongate vertical screw holes so each side can move up or down independently; to adjust the distance between the 3 contact points. I have not hit the sweet spot yet, but it must go to the Powerglide repair shop next week for a rebuild and hopefully, the mechanic can get it right.

Joe, good luck with you adjustments. I was just trying to determine how far you went with the disassembly and checking to see if you removed the "lever" to which the connecting rod attaches. That would have been where the re-assembly could have been off by 180 degrees.
