    Re: A/C hose markings

Either of both Friday and Saturday. I don't yet know the agenda because last email exchange I had I was not sure how many will attend the Advanced Judging Seminar.

Saturday might be the better day if both days are too much of a burden.

My '70 is green but not the correct green that is on the trim tag. I would love to see that Bronze. My paint is at least 15 years old and done by a previous owner. AC compressor is original but, like your hoses, they have been replaced.
Are you from the D-FW area?

Sure Brady bring those hoses we will try to put them to good use. I will bring my camera. Love to see the rest of your 1970 as well. I know some of the people scheduled to judge your car. You will have the ex-perts.

            Re: A/C hose markings

Talked to the guy that I had been referred to. He does have the dies for the crimps, but says that there's not enough room around the manifold and the muffler to get his crimping tool in.

Anyone know how this gets done? Do you cut off the old tubes closer to the manifold and the muffler, crimp the new hoses into new fittings with extended tubes, and then braze old and new tubes together? I was under the impression that the only way to do this was to cut off the old fittings right where they join the old tubes...

            Thanks

No I don't know how that is done -- probably some machine of some kind.

Brazing is not the operation you want. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) is the process for joining aluminum -- which is what the tubes, muffler and junction block are. That process will leave a weld bead at the tube to block junction, and I am not sure if they were welded originally, or just pressed into place. One can tell by looking, but if they were not welded originally the weld bead will result in a deduction for non-TFP appearance.

I wonder what they used back in the day to get the crimps on....a special crimping tool? I went to the Internet to read how to crimp AC hoses. Laborious enough for me to pay someone to do it especially with barrier hoses. Then one has to remove the manufacturers logos on the new hoses and attempt to replicate original markings. I think some would rather lose minimal points than attempt to do all that.

There might be subtle differences in overall diameter, but that may/may not be a factor. If it were me I would go for the new barrier hoses.

                  2) The crimp will be different if you use a commercial shop. I think some authoritative organization dictates the style of crimp on AC lines -- just like the same thing on brake lines. I have seen old crimping tool sets available, but I am not sure if they have exactly what would be needed to duplicate the single crimp that was used back when. And even at that one then runs the risk of dumping the AC charge in the engine compartment. There are a lot of reasons why that is undesirable.

I hope someone can post a picture of the original style crimp so everyone can see what I am talking about. The available point loss is not too much -- certainly in the single digits and probably two or three at most.
This is an original crimp on 1971 #21467.

I guess my previous photo I posted of some used hoses I am getting didn't show. Here they are in another attempt.
