    C1 fuel pump pushrod

I am replacing a fuel pump in a 1959/283 and I would like to know how to move or lift the pushrod out of the way.

    Thank you

    Gary,

you may have to turn over the engine a little to get the pushrod off of the cam lobe for the fuel pump. For ease of installation, I put a glob of bearing grease on the pushrod to keep it pushed up into the cavity while installing the pump.

I take it then that you can not access the passenger car motor mount bolt hole on a C-1 (I have forgotten). I have a spring loaded bolt I use in that hole on my 63 L-76 which can be threaded in to contact the push rod and hold it in place. The spring is in the center of the bolt to apply holding pressure to the rod w/o damaging it.

Your motor mount braket may be in the way on yours.

Here's a pic of the hole you can use.

Just place a bolt in the hole just touching the pushrod. Do not overtighten, just snug.

I believe your question is related to how to make sure the push rod is withdrawn inside the block as far as possible. If that is true, I just went through the procedure on my 1960.

I removed the mounting plate so I could get a better read on when the rod was withdrawn the maximum amount.

              1) use a small tape measure to measure from the tip of the push rod to the edge of the block; perpendicular from rod end to bottom edge of the block that will be covered by the mounting plate.
              2) Bump the starter and measure the distance again;
              3) repeat until you see the maximum distance a couple of times and then you know that the push rod has withdrawn as far as it will go.
              4) then gently tighten the side bolt to hold the push rod in place until you mount the fuel pump; a lump of grease holds it in place as well; be sure you put a small blob of grease on both ends of the push rod; cam end and pump end.
              5) Install the mounting plate; don't over tighten
              6) I then used a long bolt on one side of the pump mounting flange to tighten the pump down and then it was easy to install the short bolt on the other side
              7) remove the long bolt and install the second short bolt.
              8) REMOVE THE SIDE BOLT that was used to hold the push rod and replace it with the short bolt that came with the block

My thanks to everyone for the help on my fuel pump/pushrod project. I really appreciate it.

                Thanks again
