    C2 Tire Date Codes

    I have two C2 orginal spare tires that have been with the cars since we bought them back in the early 70's. I'd like to find out what the dates the tires were manufactured based on the tire date codes. Below are the codes from each tire. Any help in deciphering the dates would a great help.

    Jim,
    If the tires are anything but Goodyear you are SOL. Please tell us the brand.

      Hello Terry,

      They are both Firestones, the first is a goldline and the second a white wall. From the souds of your response I'll never know when they were made.

        Jim,
        As far as I know no one has come up with the "secret" date codes -- that is pre-Federal mandate 1971 -- for any tire manufacturer other than Goodyear. I very much doubt any will turn up now because each year that passes puts those codes farther into the relm of history. However, just like everyone hopes to find the "holy grail" of Corvette build records, one can hope to find these ancient date codes.

          Re: C2 Tire Date Codes

          Paraphrasing what Terry said, prior to the DOT requirement for standardized codes including date of manufacture, manufacturers used proprietary codes for whatever manufacturing data they wanted molded into the tire, and decoding these numerous codes from each manufacturer after nearly 50 years is a cold case for a good forensic detective. So far the results are nil.

            James, good luck with the Firestones. A couple of decades ago I tried getting info. from Firestone on what the previous owners tell me is the original spare in my '57. They could provide nothing. Even before that I was in the AF and met a reservist on active duty who was a tire engineer with Firestone. He made a few calls and could get no info then. A few years ago I tried again and got no response at all.

              Your effort with the Firestone engineer was the best chance. Basically, without going into details, that is how we got them from Goodyear. Unfortunately many companies, including GM, are getting very serious about employees sharing proprietary information now days. It makes no difference that the information is historical and likely could have no use in manufacturing any longer. There was a time when such activity received a "wink and a nod." No more. Times are changing.

                Re: C2 Tire Date Codes

                James, I have a code something like yours on my original Firestone. My code is :001 SD 061. I could not determine a date from this code. But elsewhere on the tire it says Made in the USA with numbers and letters after Made in USA. From this group of numbers and letters I think I figured out the manufacturing date. My example: 104-UR-1 BD-36 665. I believe the 665 stands for the 5th week in the year of 1966. I could be wrong but my production date is April 22, 1966.

                  Re: C2 Tire Date Codes

                  At Fall Carlisle 1992 I bought a NOS Good Year tube type 6.70-15 Nylon 4 ply rating, 2 ply tire marked as follows:
                  "ALL WEATHER 42" with "3-T" (inside a diamond)
                  "MTOSH88"
                  "212658-2N"

                  I sold that tire and later found a NOS Good Year 7.75-15 tubeless "ALL WEATHER IV" nylon cord 4 ply tire with a whitewall measuring 0.55" wide. Tomorrow I will check to see if there is anything that looks like a date code.

                    I just looked at a non-dot 7.75-15 General Jet that I have.

                    Around the tire is 000219C40G and CK8073 1 and V-1.

                      Re: C2 Tire Date Codes

                      My NOS Good Year 7.75-15 tire that I use as a spare because in actually fits in my 1966 Corvette tire tub has a "DOT" and is coded "CCNHJYK9". After doing some research on the internet I found information in the link below (the post on Jan. 29, 2010 @ 9:41:31 PM). You can also find this information in "Mustang Monthly", May 1997, page 16 & 18. Only page 16 is shown in the link below.

                      date = "CC" = 11th week of 1971
                      plant = "NH" = Union City MK (MK???, probably Union City, TN)
                      size = "JK" = ?? (probably 7.75-15)
                      type = "K9" = ?? (probably nylon 2 ply)
