    C2 outer door window wipe

    Hello all,
I'm trying to install new weatherstripping on my '64 roadster. I bought all new seals from Corvette Rubber (CR). I'm starting with the outer wipes for the door glass. The wipes I received are 21-5/8" in length so they extend from the back of the door to the front window channel that is also the rear post of the vent window. In looking at sheet 1.11 of the AIM it appears to me that this seal should extend the entire width of the door to seal not only the side glass but also the base of the chrome vent window frame to the body. I think what I received is the seal for the coupe. I'm waiting to CR to call me back about this but if anyone could confirm whether the roadster seal should or should not seal the door glass AND the base of the vent window frame.

I have read many posts on this subject and most talk about a metal strip that this outer window wipe attaches to. According to what I have read, there is a rubber wipe that should be stapled to the metal strip, with the metal strip attached to the door panel with screws. When I disassembled the car the outer wipes on the door windows were the same short pieces I received from CR. If my guess above is correct, someone in the past replaced the original wipes with the shorter coupe wipes (and in the process threw away the correct metal pieces. I searched "Restorer" but found none for sale. Does anyone have a pattern, a photo, or any information on these metal strips that would permit me to fabricate them?
    Thanks in advance,
    Doug

I think the rubber you received is correct. Attached is a photo of my 63 and I believe the detail is the same.

      Hi Bob,
      Thanks for your reply.

Bob Stanhope of Corvette Rubber called back and told me the same. He said the wipe for the coupe is approx 1" shorter. What still confuses me is the AIM diagram (attached), specifically view "C" which indicates "867 [roadster] only". That drawing seems to show an extension of the wipe forward from the rear post of the vent window as represented by the dashed lines, and view "c" indicates to me some sort of trim (the oval bead at the top of the door edge) fastened to an "L" shaped bracket which is attached to the body with a screw (item 2). I have a hole in the body exactly where it is depicted on the drawing.

Your picture was too small for me to get a good look at. My original rubber was on the car and Corvette Rubber is what I used it fit as per the original.

Doug -- Here's 2 pics of RH door outside wipes; the original is off a '63 with the staples; the other is NOS (maybe slight use) # 3826870 [shows on GM sticker]; UPC 1, Sheet K11 in the '65 AIM. The wrapper is GM service, probably '78 to '80, judging by when I owned the '63. Second shot is of the backside, so service no longer used staples.

Just happen to have my '65 convertible RH door apart, and can take some more pics for specific details (wipes [original ?] still attached).

Back in the mid 70's, I replaced my passemger side trim and rubber as it was damaged trying to fix the window which had come out of the channel (bent with screwdriver, but not by me). It was hard to find a single replacement and the only one I did get was from a salvage yard in Seattle. That's when I learned that (I believe) the 65 and newer trim (SS) is wider than the 63 (not longer, but the trim piece is wider or thicker). It will fit and no one will know unless they measure it. You can not possibly look at both at the same time! I even transferred the rubber to it by hand attaching the staples. Later on I got a correct 63 piece and again transferred the rubber. Still working fine to this day.

              Hi Wayne, Stu, Bob,

              Thanks for your input.

Bob I'll send the AIM drawing by e-mail. There is a limit to the file size that can be uploaded.

Wayne after looking at your photos I'm thinking that the photos show 2 pieces, the metal and the rubber. One photo makes me think that the rubber only extends through the area where the side window is located. Is the metal piece longer than the rubber piece and long enough to extend from the back of the dor to the front? I'm thinking that the metal piece may be stainless with a bead on the upper part of the front section where it extends below the bottom of the frame of the vent window. If this is the situation I'm missing the metal piece.

                Doug -

That's exactly how the part is configured.
