Disappearing Car Door

This is certainly great for anyone who has difficulty getting in and out of a car. Someone had a bright idea in England . Wonder how long it will take to get this on the market in Japan and the U.S...or in a Vette for big guys ?

Kaiser Darren (sp?) had a door that slid forward into the front fender.
I believe it was in the early 1950s.

Kaiser Darren (sp?) had a door that slid forward into the front fender.
I believe it was in the early 1950s.

You beat me to it, 1953. I believe that it's spelled "Darrin". I don't know anything about the name.

That's pretty neat, Bill. Other than the safety concerns John mentions, it would require much better window motors or even different technology, as our standard PW motors are notorius for failure.

Dutch Darrin was a well known auto designer and created some of the very stunning Packards back when. For more on the Kaiser Darrin:

Look at the video carefully. You'll notice that the sill plate pops up and the rocker panel moves outwards as well. Also notice the the sill plate is about 1 1/2 feet wide and is fairly high as well.

This is a slick video but it looks very awkward to implement and probably rises the c.g. of the car. I'd rather have the gull wing doors
