I did a brake job on my 65 coupe. New rotors, calipers brake lines etc. I have drove the car about 10 miles with no problems until now. At slow speeds, 5 mph, I am getting a thump, thump, thump noise from the rear. I jacked the car back up took the wheels off and I see nothing wrong. The adapters for the knock offs were torqued correctly, the half shafts are new, the u-joints look ok, the half shaft wheel flanges are torqued up correctly, the drive shaft looks ok, I can see nothing rubbing anywhere. The thump, thump noise goes away when I speed up. The noise is not loud but quite noticeable. It seems to be comming from the back right. If you go real slow just befor the thump noise the rear tire seems to bounce very slightlly. What else do I need to check this is driving me nuts. thanks fred

Re: rear end noise on 65
Fred, Just a thought if you touch the brake pedal lightly does the noise go away or get worst ? possiable a brake rotor that may not be true causing the disc pads to walk in the caliper. another thing is to check lug nut torques just in case there maybe a loose wheel.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: rear end noise on 65
Fred, I had a similar "sounding" problem many years ago with a car that was not driven much, only a few miles per year. The key characteristic was the noise happening only at slow speeds. I traced it to the u-joints and just sprayed a small amount of WD40 on the joints; then I cleaned up the excess on the joints. Solved the noise problem for me. Good Luck solving this one...., Tony- Top

Re: rear end noise on 65
What about sticking clutches in the positrack rear end chattering. A solution that has worked for me is to go to a quiet parking lot and do 20 tight circles in one direction and then do 20 in the opposite direction to exercise the clutches.- Top

Re: rear end noise on 65
To check for a tire separation .Put the rear tires on the front . Go to a place were you can drive about 5MPH. Let go of the steering wheel and see if it jumps when hitting the bad spot in the tire .If it is a bad tire you will probably notice a pull in the front end when the bad tire is put on the front .
Touching the brakes very lightly will also help figuring out were the noise is coming from.- Top

Re: rear end noise on 65
In your explanation you stated that you just did a brake job. Did you use new bolts for the calipers? Perhaps they are too long and contacting the rotor.
It's a tough call to make without seeing the car.- Top

Re: rear end noise on 65
Thanks for all the input. I worked on it last night. It is not the tire. I drove it some more and the more I hear it the more I think the noise is comming from the rear end or the u-joints. I will test Anthony's and Teds ideas. I used the same caliper bolts and they are torqued correctly. The lug nuts are also torqued correctly. I do not think the new rotors are bad but I will check that also. thanks fred- Top
