    My 1st post

This is my first post since joining NCRS a couple of months ago. I have a 65 vert L79 with a 4 speed that I have had for about 10 years. Now that I am retired I have the time to start correcting things that are incorrect with the goal of having it judged some day. And boy am I finding plenty of things that need fixing. Hopefully this Forum will help point me in the right direction on the proper way to correct things. So here goes:

    Is my rear end correct?
Rear cover casting #3830303, which I understand is OK for an early 65, (Nov 10, 64 build date).
Assy date 10-30-64 approx 10 days before car assy date.
Rear axle ratio code AM = 3.36 posi
Casting date E114, 5-11-64 that's 5 1/2 months before the assy date. Judging Manual say 1 to 3 months.

    Welcome aboard !

I have no problem with your differential numbers. The NCRS typically allows up to 6 months preceeding your car's build date for any component. One year is allowed for window glass. BTW, the numbers on this part of the car aren't judged anyway because of the difficulty in crawling under there to see them.

You should take it to a chapter level judging event to get a baseline on the car. You will likely find it an excellent learning experience.

***A MUST HAVE: order the technical information & judging manual for your year, it will give you all the casting numbers, part numbers and when/if there were important dates in the production year, changes to new parts, paint/color schemes, dates, etc. Will also give some insights into the years just prior and/or after yours depending on how the manual is written. Mine is '68/'69 so I get to see how things changed from one year to the next.

William: Welcome to this forum. I am new also. My car will be judged at a chapter meet this month. A freind with a 96 pt car looked the car over recently. I feel I have a long way to go. The technical manual will answer most of your questions. Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome and the advise. I've got the Judging Guide and have been thru it several times, checking things off as correct or need to correct. I also have a copy of the scoring sheets and have been marking deductions in order to see where I am.

William -- My car also has the 3830303 diff cover on a VIN 014xx car; trim tag D6 on an S-body coupe (1st day after the strike, which began about 25th Sept). I assume that the Warren MI plant, where the diff's were manufactured, resumed work at end of Oct [I understand that local issues at St.Louis kept Corvette assembly quiet for another week].

My 4.11 diff (AP 9-17-64) is cast either C-4-4 or G-4-4 (can't make it out with certainty, but maybe the latter, as my ring gear is dated 7-64).

So yes, it's easy to exceed a 3 month window when you consider the shutdown at end of one model year and the start of another, coupled with the strike early in the '65 model year. I'm sure most judges would take that into consideration.

P.S. if you ever have reason to remove the filler plug, I'd be interested in knowing if it is a taper (NPT) thread [like mine] or the straight fine thread, like '64 (and '63) ? [pic below].
