    Heater Core

How hard is it to change out the heater core on a C4 corvette? Is it as bad or worse than doing one in a C3?

I hate to tell you this but it's a MONUMENTAL TASK. A C3 is easy compared to a C4.

      Thanks Joe,
Sounds like you know from doing one yourself. I have done a couple on some C3s I had a feeling that it would be like you said.

        And, Joe's understating that.

Lyndon, if you go online and review the specific forums you can get an idea of the project. From what I've just seen it's no more difficult than changing one in a 96 S-10 where the entire dash has to come out. In fact, only part of the dash has to come out in the Vette. I've learned that working on modern cars requires you to take almost everything apart. There are no short cuts. It's a shame that GM (and some others) did'nt have engineers in the 80's and 90's that thought about maintenance and repair.

If you're the kind of person that has to have car right now, then you won't have any fun doing this. But if you're patient, don't have a schedule, and can walk away and cool down if (when) you get frustrated, you should do it.

If you get in over your head you can always swallow your pride and take the pieces to your local mechanic.

          Paul

This is one best left to the expert, You have to jack up car undo a nut on outer plenum remove hosesthen go inside and take the whole right side and center of dash apart. there are cables and vaccum hoses that will be removed.AS I said this is NOT a job for the novice.TOTALLY THE WRONG ANSWER ABOVE! FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:You don't pull the dash, instead, pull the passenger seat.Pull the hush panel, drop the ECM and the door control module.Remove the support bar going from the door pillar to the dash.Use a 7mm to take the cover off the heater box.Pull the cover, unbolt the core, re-install.Drink beer and laugh at webpage showing guys pulling dash.:)

            Re: Heater Core

Agree with what Paul said above about being patient. I have done my C3's heater core replacement with factory air, from what I remember it was not all that much easier than my 1985's heater core replacment. I did not need to drive either car and just took my time. The service manuals on my C3 and my C4 were helpful in the replacement.

This is one of the most dreaded jobs on a C4 Corvette. I have a pretty good how to write-up, but its too large to post here. Send me your email address and I'll send it to you.

I've done it several times on my 1969. However, I've never actually done it on my 1992 or any other C4. I've heard about it from friends in the Corvette service business, though. I think I've pretty much decided that if I need to do it on the 1992, I'll sell the car.
