Can you tell what the factory original color was by its vin number?

No, other than 53's, which were all polo white, C1's colors are unknown. Some C1's have survived with their color marked in chalk on the car's front cross members.

I have also seen where some folks found chalk marking in the trunk on divider panel between the hinge towers

I always look behind the passenger seat on the wall between the seat and trunk.

If the Vette was delivered to Canada... GM in Oshawa has files that will show the base information such as Colour.
