54 starter doesnt engage fully sometimes.

Keeps hanging up, everything looks clean as far as flywheel is concerened. I have to turn the crank sometimes. Any Ideas. These starters engage straight on and seem to hang up on the teeth. Thanks as always

I think that the first order of business is to remove the starter and get it rebuilt by one of the folks that are in the Driveline or even a local shop. This shouldn't be too expensive. My 54 was giving me similar problems and less than $50.00 solved the problem. My only issue was tightening the top starter bolt. I ended up making my own specialized wrench with necessary twists that I use just for that task.

Thanks Willard, thats what Im doing. Sometimes it engaged all the way and other times it would seemingly run into a flywkel tooth and hang up. Ill see soon enough.
