Re: '66 base motor with sidepipes
Tim:
The best info probably comes from Noland's Book on C2 Corvettes. He states that for 1966, sidepipes were supplied as follows:
727 cars with base engine and manual trans or L79 engine
67 cars with base engine or L36 (BB) engine with the M35 auto transmission
2823 big block (BB) cars with 4-speed transmission. These could be L36 or L72 engines
You will have to make your own assumptions and do any additional calculations yourself to try and get a split between base engine and L79 engine or between base engine and L36 engine with auto.
Maybe others will have additional or better info.

Larry, Tim --- I've looked at those ECL suffixes as well (Noland, pg 366) and can't figure the breakdown in the figures vs. description.Tim:

I would think that the major split would be the SB (#3877215/216) and the BB pipes (#3872969/970).
That puts the 727 cars with base engine and manual trans, or L79 (4-speed mandatory), taking the "AA" code. Which means that base engines with automatic required some extra or different assembly (linkage, clips ?? -- the pipes themselves were the same; 215/216).
The AB code is easy (2823 produced) All big block manual trans that took the BB pipes (969/970).
Which leaves the pesky figure of 67 "AC" code cars produced with (what I interpret as) M35 automatic transmissions. We know that only 20 L36 BB's had M35, so we can guesstimate that a freakishly small number also had sidepipes, leaving the balance for base engine automatics.- Top
