    A/C Compressor Pulley Size

Having to replace the a/c compressor on my 1965 327/300 equipped with automatic trans and power steering (3 belts coming off the engine). Where can I go to find the information for the correct size compressor pulley for the correct Frigidaire replacement compressor?

The compressor on the car now looks original but was sent out by a previous owner to be re-manufactured and he's not sure the exact compressor came back to him. I have read that it is important to have the correct size pulley on the compressor for it to operate correctly.

    Thanks in advance,

Frank -- here's some pics that member John Meissinger posted on an eBay auction that show best an early '65 compressor. Your pulley should look like this and be 5_3/4" dia. at its widest. Most rebuilders use smaller pulleys. Note the casting on the rear head of the compressor (J-13-4 => Sept 13, 1964). There's another 6_3/8" dia. pulley used in 1965 but that's for the 365hp version.

Mike -- you could always try breaking into my basement . I haven't seen the LIC specimen to compare.

In the meantime, here's a pic of Dennis Carlson's '65 at Seaside OR (NW Regional) around 2003.

Hope you don't mind me hi-jacking, but what size AC compressor pulley is correct for a 67 327-300HP with auto and PS? TIA

I can find no information that any larger pulley for 1965 applications with L-76 and C-60 was ever available from GM in SERVICE.

                  Wayne:

Thanks for the information and the photos. Searched the internet last night and can't find any manufacturers of NEW compressors using 5 3/4" pulleys. They are all using 5" pulleys.

Does anyone know of a supplier of NEW a/c compressors (that look like the original) that offers a 5 3/4" pulley?

                  Thanks in advance,

                    Re: A/C Compressor Pulley Size

                    Frank,

I can answer the compressor replacement question, and the news is not that good for rebuilt compressors.

I bought all the rings (metal) that I could find to rebuild the A-6 compressors. I waited for a special run on thrust spacers and could find all the other parts to do the rebuild correctly.

I found that the rebuilds were seals only with a clutch bearing.

I saw pictures of the rebuild on the forum and they only replaced the case O-rings, front seal, clutch bearing, and gave you the hose O-rings.

I was sent a rebuilt compressor still in the box to take apart and check . I found this to be true along with nothing else taken apart in the inner works and the reed plates were dirty as nothing was touched or cleaned.

I called the well known rebuilder and asked them where they got their rings to do the rebuild and they said they could not get rings and just replaced things as necessary.

Your compressor had metal rings and pistons that were designed for them.

Then in the 70's they went to teflon rings and different pistons.

I found that the C2 pistons were dished on 3 that I believe to be original.
Not a big deal, dished or flat top pistons but the seal replacement only takes about 2 hours and the complete rebuild takes up to 6 hrs or more depending on how many times the compressor has to be assembled to get the proper clearances.

I have searched for the rings and found few and am in the process of getting them made so a complete rebuild can be done.

                    DOM

The original pulley used for 1965 Corvette A/C compressors was GM #5914745. That pulley remains available today from GM for about 180 bucks, GM list. Is it absolutely identical to the one supplied in 1965? I do not know.

Frank, call Charlie at 918-665-0030. They still rebuild A-6 Compressors and
may have the pulley you need. Scott
