    C2 door hinge bushing

I am in the process of replacing the badly worn door hinge bushings in the driver's door of my 67. I ordered a set of repro bushings and pins from Paragon. They arrived today. The pins are too long but not a problem because I intend to reuse my old ones. The bushings however are quite short. Approximately 1/2 has long as the originals. The originals are 1/2" long and the reproductions are 1/4"long. I am speculating that a shorter bushing will wear out quicker. Has anyone replaced their C2 hinge bushings recently and purchased a correct set of bushings? If anyone has a source for a correct set of bushings, I would appreciate it if you would share the source information.
    Thanks
    Neal

Hi Neal, I bought mine from Long Island Corvette. When I was checking they seamed like the only ones to offer the short pins, the pins from LIC measure 2 and 5/8 inchs in length. Their bushings measure the same 1/4 inch you have. I dont believe the bushing size will be a problem but I would still replace your pins, after 24 years of doing body work its my experience if the bushings are shot then the pins have wear also. You can cut your new pins to the length you need, just grind the end you cut to look like your originals.

Neal, I just replaced my pins and bushings on the driver door and I ran into the same thing and I brought them from GM and the pins were to long. I just cut them down and tapered them as Brian says.

I agree with the others you should replace the pins. They do wear and it is not very difficult to shorten them. I bought the bushings and pins for my car from a GM dealership. They used the same bushings for many many years maybe 30 and they are still available. The GM bushings were the same dimension as the originals I took out.
I don't think you need to worry about the bushings wearing out quickly however. I'm sure our antique cars do not get the kind of use the car originally got and the original parts lasted 45 to 50 years. These replacements will probably last longer then the driver will.

          All,
Thanks for the input. I agree that the doors will not get the same amount of use as they might have 40 years ago which is a reason to have less concern that they will wear out any time soon.
I spoke with Ken in the technical department at Paragon earlier today and he informed me that the shorter bushings are universal(can be used on several models of vehicles) and that is all that is currently available.
I'll let you know if I come up with anything different.

You might check with a NAPA store... I bought some "generic" bushings there and if I recall correctly they were longer than the ones I got from LIC....

I recently purchased a set of replacement bushings from Napa. They were $ 4.00 apiece wholsesale. Called GM, they were $1.00 apiece. Go figure. Does any one have a pm for P/N for the pins? thanks

                Update,
The shop that is restoring my car was still not happy with the shorter bushing claiming that there is extra stress on the smaller bushing so they fabricated new ones which duplicate the originals.

Jerry, I have a set of GM door hinge pins. The part number on the package is #20046147, Group # 10.466. Hope this helps.

                    Re: C2 door hinge bushing

When I replaced the original longer hinge pin bushings in my 66 Coupe maybe three years ago, I used the GM bushings I had picked up about 6 years earlier. The two shorter types they had are in this pic.

As others have mentioned, with good lubrication and infrequent use the short bushings will work just fine. I figured that since that's all that's available, I'd just use them and be satisfied. Then...just last year, I was replacing the hinge pins and bushings in the tailgate of my 56 Nomad and when I opened up the hinge repair kit I got from Danchuk I saw the replacement bushings in that kit were the same long versions originally used by midyears (and no doubt others back then). The ID and OD and overall length seemed to be the same as the original GM midyear door hinge bushings. Never did contact Danchuk to find out if they made the bushings or had a separate vendor for them but if anyone is looking for the longer versions, Danchuk might be a source to try.

Mike: It looks like Dachuk now uses the same parts as the Corvette suppliers. Their internet catalog shows bushings #4821 and pins # 1565 that look exactly like the bushing on the left and the pin in your picture.

                        Patrick,
To me the bushing shown on the Dachuck website for the 56 Nomad tailgate hinge pin looks longer than the one shown in Michaels post.

I just looked in their door section. I did not appreciate the reference to the tailgate. Maybe they have the solution after all.

The one pic I listed shows the GM bushings and unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of the longer tailgate bushings I discovered in the Danchuk repair kit before I installed them into the tailgate hinges but I can say they are very close in length to the original early Corvette door bushings.

I contacted Danchuk and asked about the bushings they sell and this is the response.
                              Hello Mike
Will check with our supplier, may be able to get you just the bushing.
At a quick look the 4821 GM ones are 5/16 long and the other are 7/16.
                              Will let you know.
                              Thanks Gene
I still have the old/original/longer door hinge bushings from my 66 Coupe (yes, I am a bit of a packrat) and they do appear to be about .450 in length compared to the shorter bushings currently available from GM, #4821, which are .295 in length so maybe these longer versions might work out after all. I'll report back when I have news.
